How To Learn English Quickly?

Did early Mormon pioneers from non-English speaking countries learn English very quickly or did they mainly speak their own languages?

  • It seems like early Utah would have been a crossroads of many cultures and languages, but we rarely think of it that way. It would have been difficult for pioneers from other nations to learn English. Did most of the immigrants learn and speak English, or did they kind of hang out among the other people who also spoke their native languages? Were church services held in languages other than English for these immigrants?

    For a while Brigham tried to have them learn the Deseret Alphabet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deseret_alphabet Which was spoken like english but helped everyone learn a simpler form of writing.  It was abandoned.
