Walmart Pricing Strategy?

What is the pricing strategy for open source software implementations?

  • Note: I am talking  purely about implementation factor without customising a source code. For example opensource software like openerp, surgarcrm, tree.io, alfresco, openbravo and the list goes on ................ I am looking for sample implementation pricing and the pricing factors.

  • Answer:

Just selling open source software without any customization, enhancements, services, etc.?  There are some companies who sell OpenOffice CD's on eBay, etc.  They might be able to get $10 or so per sale.  This works because they are dealing with less-aware computer users who are not aware that open source software can be downloaded for free.  But for enterprise software that model would not work, since you are dealing with more informed users. The weakness of selling pure open source, with no other service, as a business model is that as soon as you have competition also selling the open source the margins are driven down to commodity levels.
