What is marketing and its roles?

What are the different roles and career options in online marketing or internet marketing?

  • I am looking to get into a startup in the online marketing/digital marketing/internet marketing sector. What are my options? What are the roles in the sector and what positions can I get into?

  • Answer:

My advice to you is to focus on the specialization, function and role that each team member plays. It is also important to understand how they all work with each other when executing an internet marketing campaign or project. The internet marketing job requirements are pretty specific these days in accordance with the rapid evolution and refinement of the industry as a whole. I have given a list of more than 100 different roles in online marketing a little further down. The purpose of this list is just to make people understand how specialized the functions and roles have become within this relatively new industry. Just go through this list and use it for: Applying for a role in a firm Map out your career in this sector Train for a certain role Suggest new roles in your firm Or if you run the firm: Either creating new roles within your business Assign functions (that you may have previously missed) to someone on your team Find out what more you could be doing in your business Internet marketing job responsibilities today require you to be an expert in a very narrow or niche segment of any one of the various digital marketing disciplines. So, here it is… Affiliate Marketing Manager Analyst, Internet Strategy Associate Director, Web Communications AVP, Interactive Marketing and New Media Business Analyst – Ecommerce Business Analyst – Web Analytics Business Development Manager Business Intelligence Manager – Internet Usage Ecommerce Communication Manager Consumer Acquisition Manager Content Analyst Social Content and New Media Specialist Corporate Web Project Manager Direct to Consumer Marketing Specialist Director of Internet Marketing Director of Consumer Marketing Director of Affiliate Marketing Director of Online Business Development Director of Business Intelligence Director of Online Merchandising Director of Search Technology Director of Web Analytics & Customer Loyalty Director of Web Analytics & Optimization Director of Web Marketing Director, Digital Media Director, Digital Relationship Marketing Director, eMarketing Strategy Director, Internet Development Director, Marketing Analytics Director, Online Analytics Director, Online Sales and Marketing Director, Web Analytics Director, Web Marketing Director, Web Research & Analytics Director, Web Services Manager of Web Experience eBusiness Leader Email Marketing Manager Group Manager, Interactive Marketing Interactive Marketing Analyst Internet Marketing Analyst Internet Operations Coordinator Internet Services Manager Manager, Online Media Analytics Manager, Online User Experience Manager, Web Site Measurement Marketing Communications Manager Marketing Manager, Strategy & New Channel Development Online Marketing Manager Online Merchandising Manager Paid Search Operations Manager Portal Product Manager Portfolio Mgr. They are very specialized positions that required a high level of expertise and experience.) Smaller firms just have people who can do multiple things that are usually done by several different specialists in larger firms.

Your question is a bit broad-based, so there are a few ways to look at it. I'll try to answer in a manner that's more simple and effective. Read on: 1. Join a start-up that is an application or platform for mobile or online. 2. Join a new advertising agency or consultancy that specializes in internet marketing and emerging media. 3. Join a B2C, B2B, or C2C product/service start-up that is utilizing the web for marketing. Within these 3 scenarios, you will typically be looking at a few different roles: 1. Coding - Programmers are in high demand for bringing business ideas to life. If you don't know code, http://codeacademy.com is a great place to start. O'Reilly manuals on programming languages are great as well. 2. Creative - Design and build the creative essence of the applications and user interfaces. Art direction, graphic and web design experience are solid prerequisites here. If you need creative inspiration, visit http://behance.net or http://thenewhive.com for ideas. 3. Business + Marketing - This is the easiest entry, but most difficult to maintain success in. If you are in this area, you need to have a solid ability to build organizational, business and product strategies to the table. Finance backgroun is a plus, because you must sell your ideas to investors, who certainly want their money back and then some. Overall recommendations: Be eager, seek out startup weekends and hackathons in your area - they're a lot of fun. Get plugged into key industry sources such as VentureBeat, TechCrunch, Entrepreneur. Decide on your major and minor areas of emphasis from above, and find a way to build your skills and portfolio. The last, and most crucial element is relationships. They're how you land jobs, pitches, and help getting customers.

The internet marketing space is a huge & fast-moving one. Things change pretty quickly, but the good news is that there are a lot of opportunities right now amongst startups looking for help with growing their products. When looking for an internet marketing role at a startup, I'd first ask the broad question, "How can I deliver the most value to this company?" By answering that question, you can start to uncover what the company's needs are, and how you can help it grow. Then I'd ask what kind of skills do I need to fill those needs? Your answer to these questions will help shape what your role at this company would look like. As other people have explained, there are a lot of marketing job titles right now and a lot of channels you can become proficient at. Just briefly walking through a list of channels can give you a sense of how vast the space is: Paid search Search engine optimization Email marketing Social media marketing (FB, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.) Social advertising Display advertising Content marketing Mobile marketing Affiliate marketing Partnerships And more... Crazy right? It's not possible to become an expert of every single channel. When you're just starting out on your marketing journey, it's probably best to focus on developing expertise in just 1 or 2 channels. Along those lines, many marketers in the industry have adopted the notion of a T-Shaped Marketer. I think it's a good career paradigm to consider as long you understand that the most important thing is that you're delivering value to your company. In many cases, being a channel expert will be more valuable to companies than being a generalist. But, there are cases, i.e. small startups, where being a generalist comfortable with testing multiple channels will be more valuable than being only an expert at one channel. If you're still with me at this point, I'd suggest for you to check out recent industry articles on career advice for marketers. They can give you a good sense of where the industry is headed and what you need to learn to be valuable to your company: http://moz.com/rand/the-t-shaped-web-marketer/ https://www.distilled.net/blog/seo/building-a-t-shaped-skill-set/ http://brianbalfour.com/post/63581380690/customer-acquisition http://www.buzzstream.com/blog/professional-development-for-digital-marketers.html

Good question… This is precisely the same question I had when I was suddenly pushed into Digital Marketing by my employer. Digital Marketing is HUGE and I am not exaggerating. The career options are endless!! I started off as a billing and policy specialist for AdWords! I mean, I had absolutely no connection to how the domain works, but I still was a part of it. I then graduated on nitty gritties of the subject eventually, but to be honest, you can find a career in almost anything in Digital Marketing. Well, there are majorly two options that you would want to work for, a typical ad agency, wherein they do end to end support and management of the advertising or work for a corporate like me, wherein giants like Google and Facebook outsource their processes to us. I always have been working with the corporates, so I’ll only talk about what I know. So, take any ad serving product, best example at my disposal would be AdWords. Now, this product generates, close to 90% or more of the total revenue by Google, I am not kidding. This basically means that there’s tons of work to do and there’s tons of companies that hire to do these jobs. Of course, there are companies like Facebook too who hire for these kind of jobs. Now, listening to this, and if you’re paying attention, the very next question that should pop up in your head, should be...? How do I get these jobs... Hope I’ve read your mind correctly, else you could just stop reading right here... Well, if you still are reading, that probably should mean that you’re one of the smart ones ;-) or not... Either way... The answer to the question is Domain Knowledge! Corporate companies do not expect a fully functional and ready to deploy resource. They love to train their employees, only so much that their skillsets are useful to them and none else. Well, my job as a trainer is to train with a holistic point of view, since you need to give some space to learn on the job.To get up to speed with the current standards in Digital Marketing, there’s plenty options available online or in your local institutes. But, don’t make the same mistake that I did. Learn from resources and people who know what they’re talking about. The best that I know, and wherefrom I learnt all what I did is http://simplilearn.com. These guys came about only a while ago and they’ve made a very prominent mark on the industry. The courses that they  provide are very current and real time. The application of the knowledge is seamless. The course that I started off with was the http://www.simplilearn.com/digital-marketing/advanced-online-marketing-certification-training-bundle. These guys have made a very holistic syllabus to approach all the topic under the umbrella of Digital Marketing, thereby enabling an individual to get into any stream of the subject the she/he prefers to. Don’t take my word for it, go to the http://www.simplilearn.com/ and browse about. If you need help, you have those online reps to help you with questions. They’re nice and helpful.Do let me know how things work out for you. Hey if possible, if you’re good enough, I might as well refer you in my company! Good luck!
