Setting up a prop kit for beauty product photographs
-
I am starting a blog which will feature photographs taken by my boyfriend and myself. He is a professional video cameraman and also an excellent photographer but neither of us are stylists. Can you help with some prop and set up ideas? The blog is beauty and food related with reviews on products, skincare and makeup tips/looks, and then a section on food with recipes, restaurant reviews etc. The food section is not a problem at all and neither are the makeup looks, and photographs of me demonstrating products, applying makeup and holding things. What I am running out of ideas for are photos of static products. We have been using a makeshift light cube and are looking to purchase or make a proper one and the lighting is coming out beautiful. But the tubes or pots are just kind of sitting there and it's very minimalistic. Throwing some parts out of focus is nice and my bf is very cabable of producing a lovely shot. What I am looking for is a small 'kit' of props to use to make things more interesting. Small blocks for things to stand on to change the height. A glass dish to squeeze some product on. That's all I've got right now. Please help me with some ideas of things to put in my prop kit. Not too expensive, and readily available would be good. I'm also going to check out some magazines and online sources so ideas for good examples are appreciated too. Thank you.

You could squiggle lines onto a white sheet of paper or shred some of the powder onto the paper and then have the product sitting beside it. A spoon? Pile the product in a spoon. Cut up the lipstick and pile on top like stacking cans. That's certainly http://www.thebudgetbabe.com/uploads/2008/200804/allure-spring-makeup.jpg for http://bryanbantry.com/cms/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Allure3.jpg shoots, but as a blog I think it'll make you look like a joke. It's kind of the norm for beauty bloggers to give away their excess product, and even if you don't, readers will roll their eyes at the destruction of makeup. (After all, you must not be planning on using it again if you're going to destroy it!) You could go in two directions: basic and servicey, like http://www.temptalia.com/revlon-colorburst-lacquer-balm-review-photos-swatches#more-148031, or slightly more artsy like http://intothegloss.com/2013/10/lipstick-uses-blush/. ITG doesn't have a strict style, so take a look at some of their other http://intothegloss.com/reviews/page/3/. The site as a whole is fantastic, stylish, and just a bit quirky.

I'd go to a thrift store or discount home place and pick some small plates and bowls that for your overall aesthetic. Maybe some bud vases? You can switch out flowers for different looks. Also consider a counter tableau with a mirror behind it.

What is important about makeup is the color and texture. You could squiggle lines onto a white sheet of paper or shred some of the powder onto the paper and then have the product sitting beside it. A spoon? Pile the product in a spoon. Cut up the lipstick and pile on top like stacking cans. And never underestimate the power of an extreme close up (on shadow, mascara, eyeliner etc) for texture. You could get the head of a mannequin (all white/dark one, no distinct eyes or features) to draw on. What about contrasting styles and location? Take pictures of makeup in the garage, on the hood of a car, on a mirror, on a wicker surface etc. Or you could set up the product in a funky pattern. Finally I found a http://picturesofmakeup.tumblr.com/ of makeup photos for ideas.
