find me a Canadian women's magazine
-
I'm looking for a magazine subscription for a gift. The recipient lives in small-town Canada, is very fit and outdoorsy, has a cozy house, enjoys gardening in the summer, and is a child-free professional in her 30s. Can you recommend any magazines that might fit? Not too rustic, but not too design-focused. Just a general eco-friendly-interesting-articles-home-and-lifestyle-women's-interest mag (no celebrities and not too much fashion and make-up). US magazines would be fine but they would need to post to Canada at a reasonable rate.

The answer to this question used to be Harrowsmith, but they closed down a couple of years back. However, the original publisher and some of the ex-Harrosmith people have started an almanac, with details http://harrowsmithalmanac.com/. They seem to be publishing semi-annually. Not exactly what you are looking for, but hits many of your requirements.

http://www.canadianliving.com/ is a great magazine for recipes and general home/culture articles, but it may be a bit too family-focused. Cottage Life is also a nice idea.

Canadian Living will be a bit old for her, I think, and it's got way too much about childrearing. Chatelaine skews younger and has a pretty wide variety of topics if maybe a little too much fashion. It's a bit dull but pretty solid. No celebrity junk. If you're willing to go beyond the home/garden realm, Maisonneuve and The Walrus have better writing, a broader range of topics (politics, human interest, arts, etc.) and I think would be a better gift because they may not be something she already sees at the grocery checkout magazine rack every week.

I'm not much of a magazine person at all, but every now and again I find myself grabbing a copy of http://www.realsimple.com/. It's "lifestyle" in a very practical, modern and stylish way. It's the kind of magazine that I keep around to reference, and in fact I have four issues from various years staring at me from across the room right now. Worth checking out. (It's Time Inc. owned, but I'm in Canada and I see it on the newstands so subscriptions are definitely possible.)

I wouldn't describe myself as a foodie, but the two issues of Lucky Peach I've bought I actually read and savoured the whole thing. Dumbo Feather is Australian... don't know how much shipping would be, though they have quite a few articles on their website; Dumbo Feather interviews interesting people (and does so well).

There's a UK magazine called http://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/lifestyle/the-simple-things-magazine-subscription/ which would be right up her street if they had a Canadian edition. I do like The Walrus, it has a nice range of articles and as a non-Canadian I learn something interesting each issue.
