What kind of used projector can I get that supports wireless live stream
-
I have a ceiling mount for a projector â Iâd like to get a projector that I can use to wirelessly stream video from the internet (e.g. from Netflix) with no plugs and cords connecting my projector to my computer necessary. This appears to be a bit more complicated than Iâd guess. Iâm looking for something with minimum specs of 1100 lumens and a contrast ratio of at least 600:1 (1200:1 would be even better). Iâd really like to be able to get something used or pay mid-range costs, but am not even sure where to start with a list of projectors to consider. I'd like to spend less than $500 on a used projector. Anyone on MeFi with any suggestions for models to consider? Note, Iâve considered the add-ons which would allow me to stream with my existing projector, they all appear finicky enough to not work consistently so I've ruled them out. Thanks!!

FAVI has a projector with AirPlay (and therefore AirPlay video mirroring) support http://www.prweb.com/releases/2011/12/prweb9040755.htm, but what add-ons have you considered? You could mount an Apple TV to the projector (it's tiny) and run http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5404 from your laptop to the Apple TV device. Then you can use any projector you want. Seems to work pretty well.

Like Blazecock (May I call you Blazecock?), I'm wondering what add-ons you've tried, since I think there are some really great, not-flakey-at-all add-ons out there. In addition to the Apple TV, maybe take a look at the http://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/devices/chromecast/? They're http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00DR0PDNE/metafilter-20/ref=nosim/ and seem to be well-reviewed.

Whoa. Too fast on the "Post" trigger. One thing to point out is that the Chromecast is so cheap ($35) that, assuming you have an HDMI port on your current projector, you should probably just try it. Then, if you're not happy with the results, move on to the new projector and an Apple TV.

Iâm looking for something with minimum specs of 1100 lumens For what kind of room? I have a feeling you're going to be very, very disappointed with that. I also think that buying a projector with this integrated is a waste of money. You're paying at least a couple hundred more for something that a $30 chromcast stick or a cheap as hell on clearance intel WiDi box will do. For instance, i checked on the casio laser+led models i was going to recommend(FUCK xenon bulb projectors) and the models with the extremely limited wireless features that only work with certain apps and such are like $350 more than the normal ones. So with that out of the way, i'm writing this as someone who has owned a huge, huge stack of projectors. From little 800x600 or 1024x768 classroom models, to some more "home theater"-ish ones, to big hulking high-lumen monsters made to throw a VERY large screen.(A friend of mine worked at a place that kept throwing them out when ANY error light would come on, and... well long story and not relevant here, point is i've owned a lot) I would never buy anything again that wasn't something like sharps laser+LED. Every single one, even the cheapest is 1800:1 contrast. The minimum basic models are 2500 lumens. 1200 lumens will make you unhappy unless you're in a basement with no windows that's 100% pitch black all the time. Hell, even http://www.ebay.com/itm/Casio-XJ-A130-LED-Laser-Hybrid-Projector-/200989956263?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ecbef58a7 which is a more basic model i didn't even realize they make will make you quite happy. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Casio-Signature-XJ-M145-3D-Ready-DLP-Projector-Used-Less-than-10-hours-/151165763110?pt=US_Video_Projectors&hash=item23322e7e26 will likely go close to the price you said you wanted, and does include the wireless features. Personally though, i'd hit craigslist and try and pick up just the cheapest one of those i could find and then get a chromecast stick or something. Because i really think you're approaching this wrong. It's like asking "what laptop has the best speakers". Plugging something in will cheaper and easier every time, and considering anything other than that should only even be on the table if there's specific reasons why. You don't need a cord running from your laptop to the projector to make it happen, just a unit that accepts streaming to jack into the projector.
