Are any sports bars open on Thanksgiving?

East Bay bars to watch the Series for people who don't like sports bars.

  • Back when I lived in Boston and the Sox were in the playoffs, I would occasionally go to http://www.joe-sent-me.com/ around the corner from my apartment to watch the games. It was kind of the perfect New England neighborhood bar, and I'm looking for a similar place in the East Bay. It wasn't specifically a sports bar, but the TV always had the game on--loud enough to hear, but not so loud that it felt like it was going to split open my skull. It was busy enough to feel convivial, but it was always possible to get a seat. If I wanted to make casual conversation with strangers, I could, but it was also possible to be left alone. It was most definitely not a meat market. It was likewise anything but a gastropub or a microbrewery. It served some food, but there was no pressure to order anything but a beer every couple of innings. The Sox are in the World Series. I feel wicked homesick. Is there a bar like this in the East Bay where I can go watch the game this weekend?

  • Answer:

If you're in the Baggy's neighborhood, around the corner on Park Blvd. (right next to the defunct Parkway theater with the murals) is the http://www.yelp.com/biz/parkway-lounge-oakland which is a relaxed, smallish neighborhood place with 4 or 5 screens. Therefore you'll have two bar options in this area if one is busy or not working for you, though the vibe is pretty similar between the two.

I should note that I'm already familiar with http://www.theyankee.com/. I've been a couple of times, and it's not really the kind of atmosphere I'm looking for.

You might want to try http://www.bobbygspizzeria.com/ in Berkeley. They show all major games. Have good food and lots of beer options. It gets loud though, because the spot is so small and they might have a jazz band playing.

I was going to say Bobby G's as well. I watched Euro 2008 there, which was, of course, during the day, so I can't really comment on the noise level in the evening with or without jazz band.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/george-and-walts-oaklands might work for you. Possibly it leans a little too sporty.

I was going to say Bobby G's as well. I watched Euro 2008 there, which was, of course, during the day, so I can't really comment on the noise level in the evening with or without jazz band. I lived over Bobby G's from 2008-2010, and while the noise level got high for events like Euro 2008 or the World Cup, it tended to be average on other nights when they didn't have a live band. Not sure if they're more packed nowadays. They serve pizza and the like, but it's not a gastropub. I recommend it! I spent a fair amount of time there, and they were always super nice and didn't mind when a friend and I camped out at a table for hours (we did buy more food/drinks, obviously).

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! We ended up busting out the digital receiver and an antenna and watching the remaining games at home, but I'm glad to know my options for next season.
