How to create a new jQuery UI theme based on a (non-jQuery UI) web site?
-
I'm a software developer, not a web designer. I use jQuery UI and pick one of the predefined themes when I create a web application. What's the easiest way to create a new theme (using ThemeRoller) that will look similar to (in terms of colors) an existing web site? Currently I'm creating a web application for a customer who has an existing web site that doesn't use jQuery UI or any other theme-created UI (such as Boostrap, etc.) The web app I'm creating for them will be linked to from their existing web site, and they want the app I'm creating to "look similar to" (in terms of fonts and colors) their current web site. The jQuery UI theme I've used so far is the "Humanity" theme, which looks "orangey". The customer's existing site looks "green." The "Humanity" theme doesn't have just one shade of orange - there are several subtle variations used (for borders, hover states, etc.) Is there a way to easily (automatically?) create a similar set of variations based on the green color used in the customer's current web site? Or is this something that someone must do "by hand."?

There are a number of complimentary color generators available. http://www.colorsontheweb.com/colorwizard.asp and here's a link to a http://www.evolutionarydesigns.net/blog/2010/08/27/color-palette-generators/.

Unfortunately, I've never come across a tidy and easy solution like you suggest. In fact, I've specifically not used jQuery UI on a couple of occasions simply because the theming was too heavy a task, and it'd be easier with a different toolkit. I have just found http://jquit.com/builder/, an alternative theme generator which looks to give much better results. There are also a few http://taitems.github.io/Aristo-jQuery-UI-Theme/ http://addyosmani.github.io/jquery-ui-bootstrap/components.html#block-spinner available, which may be more acceptable out of the box.
