How to change thin image to fat image in iPhone SDK?

iPhone contacts: image issue

  • All contacts on my iPhone have the wrong image associated with them. In each case, all contact info is correct except that the image is a different contact's image. On the only Mac that's ever synced with this phone, all contacts' images are correct when viewed in the Address Book app. I've tried the Advanced option during iTunes sync, "Replace information on this iPhone" with the info on the Mac. Each time I try that, all the images are just randomly shuffled around again (each contact gets a NEW wrong image, but all its info other than the image stays correct). Googling shows me lots of people asking this question, but no solutions that apply to me. This phone's never had anything to do with MobileMe or Outlook syncing (just syncs locally over USB) and it's never been jailbroken. Phone is running OS 5.1 (don't want to upgrade to OS 6 at the moment). Mac is running OS 10.7. (One possible cause is Cobook, the only third-party app I've ever installed that has the power to modify your contacts' info. But this issue started well after I installed Cobook [I can't pinpoint anything I did shortly before this issue started]. I emailed Cobook's support address and they asked me good questions, but they don't know what's happening and haven't heard of this issue. And my contacts' images are all correct in the Cobook app on the Mac.)

Something similar happened to me last week. Find Friends was mismatching contacts from my Address Book: one person got labeled as her brother, someone else got labeled http://groups.csail.mit.edu/sls/research/jupiter.shtml. It was bizarre. The mismatches weren't sequential or alphabetical; as far as I could tell, they were totally random. And I have no idea what caused it. I had upgraded to iOS 6 a week earlier...but it was a week earlier. Then all of a sudden, this glitch. I tried everything. I forced-quit the apps. I synced my phone repeatedly. I rebooted. Nothing worked. Then in the middle of one afternoon a few days later, I opened Find Friends to discover it was fixed, just as suddenly and randomly. No explanation: the problem just went away. IPhones do this shit. Yesterday an email showed up in my iPhone's Mail app. The inbox labeled it as being from "Unknown Sender" and dated 1969. I couldn't swipe-delete it. I clicked "edit" in the inbox, and I couldn't select the message to delete it that way. And I couldn't open it. So I walked to the nearby Apple store for help. On my way down the street, the email's displayed date inexplicably changed from 1969 to 2000. The Apple store technician said, "Hmm, that's weird," and had no solution. Two hours later, the phantom email disappeared.

Weird. Not that this would necessarily explain why all the images are wrong, but do you have the Facebook app installed and set to sync with your contacts?

BurntHombre

Good question, BurntHombre -- no, Cobook is the only third-party app I have that's syncing with my contacts. Since I posted the question, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Cobook on the phone (it's currently rebuilding its database, a long process - will report if this changes anything).

(Didn't help; and entirely uninstalling Cobook, restarting phone, and resyncing phone again with "Replace information on this iPhone" didn't help.)

Mine's doing this too (also on IOS5). And it has done it since it lost all my contacts about six months ago. I added some of my contacts back in and it's associating them with the wrong pictures. So when my neighbor calls me it shows a picture of my grandma. And the cropping is really bad and the orientation is landscape, not portrait. I have no idea why it's doing this or why it lost all my contacts, but you're not the only one with a weird iPhone glitch! I had a cloud-based contact sync app that I used when I switched from a 3GS to a 4, but I deleted it a year or so ago. Your post reminded me of it, so I'm going to redownload it and try to restore my contacts later today. If anything interesting happens I'll update.
