How to present a poem artistically?

How to present a copy of a ribbon-themed poem as a wedding gift?

  • I have commissioned a poem for some lovely, non-materialistic friends, who requested no gifts for their wedding. The theme of the poem is the leminscate (a figure 8) as a metaphor for marriage, and it evokes the word's greek meaning of "decorated with ribbons." This would seem to lend itself to some interesting, crafty ideas for how to frame or print a copy of the poem, but I am not crafty, and am drawing a blank. And it probably shouldn't look like one of those "Support our Troops" ribbon icons either. Any better ideas?

  • Answer:

Maybe print it on a long, thin piece of paper and then Möbius strip it. Then dangle it from a hook or nail hammered into a simple piece of wood that can be hung on their wall.

If you have lovely printing and a bit of time, I would get a thin strip of some bendable wood like balsa and great a sort of figure 8 for a walll hanging. Or you could do it smaller on paper and put it in a shadowbox.

I would just frame a piece of card stock with the poem printed on it, decorated with the ribbon. http://pinterest.com/pin/209276713903942951/, but with the poem where the butterflies are. If you wanted to go totally easy, you could just buy a card like this from a stationery store, get the poem printed on high quality/thick paper, cut it out and glue it to the front of the card, then frame that. Another way to go would be to wrap the frame itself in ribbon, but I think having the ribbon inside the frame will be more lasting and so more suitable as a wedding gift.

Perhaps inscribed on a rolled up scroll tied with a bow tie ribbon ( figure eightish). They could never open it, so I would include a secret message/variation. Maybe box framed to make it a gift and not a memento....

I once saw these wall hangings that were poems and texts printed onto strips of paper and woven through thin (so they didn't obscure the text) vertical warp strings in a frame. I thought they were pretty neat. You could do something like that with either paper as the "ribbon," or even better, use a continuous piece of smooth fabric ribbon and hand letter the text on it using a fabric pen then weave it in (or perhaps it would be better to weave it then do the lettering).

Pinterest is helpful for these things. A few pinterest searches that turned up some cool packaging ideas: http://pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=ribbon%20gift%20wrap http://pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=ribbon%20package http://pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=ribbon%20presentation
