Are there non-Chexsystems banks in Washington State?

Good bank in Washington State

  • I'm looking to set up a personal account in a local bank in Washington state. I want to work with a bank that does local business and isn't laundering hundreds of billions of dollars for drug cartels (or insert whatever other horrifying banking scandal comes to mind.) I need a bank with office and ATM locations in the Northwest part of the state, and ideally they'd have an ATM sharing agreement with banks/credit unions in other parts of the country (and Canada? does that happen?) I've done some initial research on my own, but this seemed like the kind of thing the hivemind could help with. Thanks in advance for any advice.

BECU is exactly what you want.

I bank with http://www.becu.org and I am generally happy with them.

I have an account with https://www.bankwithsterling.com/Products/Personal/Checking.aspx - doesn't have an ATM sharing agreement but will reimburse you $10/month for fees charged by other banks. They have https://www.bankwithsterling.com/Locations.aspx in WA as well. I also have an account with https://www.firsttechfed.com/Locations/index.aspx, which is part of a Credit Union group, so they do ATM and branch sharing with the 7-11 network and the 'CU service center network'. I don't know if they have any limits to who can sign up or not.

Last I checked, https://www.firsttechfed.com/ credit union was pretty good. No idea if you're eligible or not. I've also heard BECU is good, and has more open membership eligibility.

BECU is pretty good. I have been disappointed in my interactions with WSECU and School Employees Credit Union of Washington. What do you mean by the northwest part of the state? The most northern BECU branch is in Mount Vernon.

First Tech is very popular and good.

http://www.wecu.com/branches seem to have you covered. I bank with them in the US and haven't had any problems. They have no-fee ATMs in Canada, and are in the northest and westest bit of Washington.

I'm with BECU and have had almost no problems with them. (And the one problem I did have wasn't theirs, it was someone who ran my card four times and kicked me to $3 under my daily limit on a Sunday, when they don't have hours and I had to wait until Monday morning to call and get it dealt with.) Oh, and the ATMs that are run by Citibank in 7-11s everywhere are free-to-use for BECU members.

BECU and WSECU have sharing agreements that let you deposit and withdraw from their branches, and thousands of other credit unions. I know, because since I moved to the east side there aren't any more BECU branches within easy driving distance. BECU is OK, no complaints in ten years. Trying to find a local credit union like you are, we joined Solarity CU, but I don't think they go that far north. If you are near Whidbey Island, stay away from Navy Federal Credit Union. I had an account there for years, and they are almost as bad as a traditional bank as far as lousy customer service and we-think-you-are-stupid little fees. Honestly, when people ask for a banking recommendation, http://ask.metafilter.com/218326/What-bank-do-you-like#3153244. Not having a physical location is more than made up for by the great service, ATM rebates, etc.
