How can I find information on the first Supreme Court Justice of Puerto Rico?
-
Genealogy meets history (I hope): Looking for biographical information on the first chief justice of the Puerto Rican supreme court. I am researching my husbandâs family history, and family lore says that they are related to Jose Severo Quiñones, the first chief justice of the supreme court of Puerto Rico. Of course, this doesnât mean itâs true, but Iâd like to confirm or deny. Thereâs no evidence he is direct ancestor, could be a distant cousin, etc. (or there could be no relation at all). Basically all I can find is basic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%83%C2%A9_Severo_Qui%C3%83%C2%B1ones a http://www.escuelasdepr.com/escuela/jose-severo-quinones-1206.html in PR named for him, and a mention of his death in the http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F60B1EF83F5D12738DDDAA0994DB405B898CF1D3 The same information appears in a few places online in English and Spanish, but Iâd like to go a little deeper. What am I missing? Given that he was a public figure I have to think somewhere there would be mention of his wife, children (if he had either), or any other biographical information I can use to triangulate. It doesnât look like death records are available until 1931, so the 1909 death record doesnât look feasible. Any ideas? Where could I find a lengthier biography? Itâs hard to say precisely what I am looking for, but you never know what clues will lead to a larger discovery or confirmation. Things like his parentsâ names, wifeâs name, childrensâ names, etc. would all be considered a home run.

Answer:
I was able to find his https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-10481-54889-17?cc=1807092&wc=5840342 in the https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http://www.familysearch.org/searchapi/search/collection/1807092 collection at FamilySearch. It says that his parents were José Gabriel Quiñones and Ceferina Caro. His full name is given as José Severo del Carmen Quiñones Caro, leading me to http://www.familias-de-fajardo.com/12164.htm, which gives his paternal ancestry and the name of his wife: Modesta Gámbaro Correa.
