Where can I find information about the demographic makeup of Ivy League schools in the 1950s? I am doing research for a book, and would like to know how similar were the average students at Dartmouth and Princeton in the 1950s? I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction if anyone knows where I can find that information online. I need a proper source for citation, but if you know off of the top of your head, that would help too. Thanks.

Answer:
Have you tried calling the libraries of these universities? I bet research librarians could at least point you in the right direction. Also, http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0618574581/metafilter-20/ref=nosim/ is a book about the history of Ivy League admissions. I haven't read it, but I bet his cited sources would be useful to look through.

I have my great uncle's Princeton yearbooks from 1951-1955 and can send them if you'll be able to send them back.

Although this is anecdata, looking in old yearbooks from the Special Collections Library gave me a somewhat accurate description. Class alumni directors and the office of admissions are great sources, as well, if you don't mind making phone calls.

Marcia Graham Synnott's http://books.google.com/books?id=73gjtwAACAAJ&dq=synnott+half-opened+door is a solid history of admissions quotas â perhaps not as breezily written and certainly not as much of a bestseller as the Karabel book, but IIRC it has lots of good footnotes that will help you track down the sources you're looking for.

Have you asked the alumni associations from each school?

Dartmouth's alumni association can be very helpful, yes. If they can't help directly they will point you to the person who can.
