Google Voice calls from Playa del Carmen?

  • Can I make calls over the free Wifi at the Mexican resort I'll be at this week? I vacationed in Playa del Carmen about 5 years ago, and brought a prepaid calling card with me to use to call home, anticipating that I wouldn't have cell signal. The resort somehow blocked the use of calling cards that weren't purchased from them, so not only did I have to buy one of their WAY overpriced cards, I came back from vacation with the original unused card. This year, I'm going to the Royal Playa del Carmen which includes Wifi with your room charge. I'm a heavy google voice user, so my plan is to just us GV to make my calls from my smartphone over wifi. So, do the resorts have a port blocked or anything else in place that would foil my plan? Thanks!

You'll need something like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gvoip&hl=en - Google Voice on its own can't do calls over WiFi. Skype, as mentioned, is another good option.

I've done Skype calls from resorts in Costa Rica and Mexico without any problems. In fact, the travel companies specifically recommended using the hotel wifi for VOIP calls to avoid the hassle of dealing with the roaming/international call plan stuff.

http://www.talkatone.com/ works with GV to do this.

I use talkatone also. Works great.

Technically, you can http://www.google.com/chat/voice/. It just has to be done from within Gmail's chat sidebar and is not free. Plus, I suspect you'd need a laptop. If what I'm understanding is correct, it would https://www.google.com/voice/rates. So, yeah, Talkatone may be the best overall option to use a smartphone w/ wifi.

Last week, I used Facebook Messenger to make free international calls to my boyfriend. I used Facebook Messenger for iOS, connecting over my hotel's wifi, and he used the same app on his Android phone (which was only updated to have the VOIP calling feature recently). Worked great.
