The woman was a great performer. I don't see her ever as Edith, I see Edith.

Great? Acting is way overrated. All you do is pretend to be someone else and read from a script. Her "dingbat" use of the New York accent was natural for her, seeing she was born in Manhattan in 1923. After she became famous in All In the Family, people noticed her earlier appearances, with that same voice, such as the school secretary Sadie Finch in Up the Down Staircase. Having died at 90, she was blessed with a long and interesting life.

Sharrona beat me to say I never saw her as anyone but Edith. When I saw her in You've Got Mail I remember saying that "There's Edith."
