How to tell someone you are not interested?

Please Help: Can someone tell me how to deal with multiple girls, who are friends, when they are interested in me?

This has happened to me several times now. I usually meet with several girls, who all start showing interest. Yet they are all friends. Generally, I will be interested in one girl in particular, and try to approach her. Yet, usually one of the other girls shows more interest. Then the other shy girls back off, including the one I am interested in. They break off because they don't want to hurt their friendship. The inevitable result is that I try to be polite to the girl who is pursuing me. Then the girl I was interested in stops showing interest. The other girls disappear and the one that is chasing me becomes dispondent when she realises that I was interested in someone else. Please help!
