How long does it take to write a screenplay?

Is it illegal to write a screenplay based on another one without asking for permission?

  • I came across a screenplay called "the room at the Inn" on this screenwriting website I go to. The writer put "inspired by Steven King's 1408" but when I was reading the script, I realized that the writer basically copied the movie "1408" almost word for word, scene for scene. The writer's profile says he's only 15, so I highly doubt he asked the writers for permission. Anyway, can a writer get in trouble for taking the idea of a previous writer even though the writer wrote their screenplay based on a Novel(the writer of the movie 1408) without asking for permission? I'm going to copy and paste the screenplay I read here and you can read it. It's not a full-length screenplay, just a really short version and you can tell me if it is very similar to the movie. http://www.plotbot.com/screenplays/the_room_at_the_inn

Plots, characters and settings can be copyrighted, so yes, that would be illegal.

No, but it is illegal to publish it - which is what you are doing by copying and pasting. You should just inform Stephen King's agent, with a URL.
