Do you need a special foreign license to drive in Germany?

I'm not from Germany. Do I need a special license to drive on Germany's Autobahn? If so how do I get one, how much does the license cost?

  • Answer:

Your British licence will cover you in Germany.... Good idea to study their rules first....There is some very weird rules the French make motorist follow at to what must be carried in your vehicle by law...Like extra sets of driving glasses and breathalyser kits... Germany might have similar rules as well

Germany is part of the EU the same as the UK, Americans can drive there so it must also apply in Germany. but to get cheaper insurance you can get an international license in the US I think your AAA will arrange one, but take care as a lifetime of 55 mph is rather scary to alter to 90 mph that seems to be the norm on the Autobahn, then you have the odd nutcase trying to crack the 200 mph barrier!

Having been driving many years and having ridden many times in cars on the Autobahn, I am sure I would rather ride than drive on it. Part of my issue would be that I am not fluent in German so even reading of signs takes extra concentration. But I have driven on their regular roads and it was fine.

being from the USA, had an international license when i was in that area.

You don't, but it may take you some time to get used to driving on the wrong side of the road.
