What exactly is excessive emotional appeal as related to public speaking?

Interesting possible subjects for a paper, related to the English speaking world, especially the USA or UK?

  • I have to make a paper about something related to the English speaking world, and I thought about a subject related to the USA or UK, but there are so many choices, that I can't think of just one and I don't have an idea on how to search properly on the Internet, to find a full list of them. So, can anyone provide me with a few fascinating subjects to write about approx. 8-10 pages? Thanks.

  • Answer:

You could explore the linguistic differences between the USA and the UK - which, as George Bernard Shaw pointed out, are two countries separated by a common language.

You might consider a paper on comments made to smart people when they give an address to the general public. You would quote an informed individual, say a scientist giving a talk on the "Big Bang", for example, and list comments and questions from his/her audience. If you couch the lecture in England, for example, you could use their phrasing as compared to ours. The 'Lou' is the rest room, 'knock me up' means wake me up not, the other thing. 'Bangers n beans' is sausage and beams, (lunch, in a 'pub'). or bar. You might point out that Newton was wrong about gravity and his calculus didn't include differential equations or differentials. Your paper could be enormous and interesting as well as funny. Bertrand Russell, the world famous British mathematician was giving a lecture at the British Museum to a large audience trying to explain how the Earth floats in space, apparently with nothing supporting it. He has just finished explaining and, from the back of the room, came the word, "Rubbish" British for 'crap'. Russell, not being timid, singled out the speaker, a little old lady doing her knitting near the back of the room, invited because her family was a large contributor to the Museum. Russell interrupted his lecture and asked, "pray tell, Madam, upon what does the Earth rest? She answered with the truth as told to many a student in the Middle Ages, that the Earth rests on the back of a very large tortoise. Russell then had her, “and tell me Madam, upon what does the Tortoise rest?” “Well”, she answered, “it’s Tortoises all the way down, isn’t it?” This has the advantage of being part of history as well as funny not to mention a great example of what many of us use for the collection of fantasies and misinformation we accept as fact.
