Can you have arthroscopic knee surgery more than once on the same knee?

How long does it take for a knee to completely heal after arthroscopic surgery?

  • I had a small cartilage tear in my knee and had arthroscopic surgery on my medial meniscus in October '11. I still have some swelling and slight pain around my knee and calf. Astym treatment helps but it's only a matter of time before the pain comes back again. I've had the treatment done 3 times. I really need help and answers.

  • Answer:

Please see your orthopedic surgeon again. When I had that surgery done for the same thing (my daughter's boyfriend was teaching me how to roll a kayak.....never mind.....), I was walking in a couple of days and pain-free in about a month or 6 weeks. I can't remember exactly how long except I was really happy that it wasn't a long time. So the doctor may not have gotten everything, or there may be something else going on. Please see him/her.

Thank you for your response. I should have added that it was a cartilage flap removal through arthroscopic surgery. It was 6-8mm in length. The doctor was not positive what actually was the cause until he went inside my knee. After removing the cartilage flap he poked tiny holes around my meniscus to increase blood flow in case there was a minor tear. The pain is much better than before i had the surgery but there is now a pain and swelling behind my knee.
