my laptop has an HDMI port but my tv does not. Can I connect the 2 via BluRay DVD player or HDTV DVR ?

Answer:
Does either one have HDMI input? AND have A/V pass-through feature? Most likely not. You need a A/V receiver, or you can simply get a video converter. If your TV happens to have DVI input then you can try a HDMI to DVI+audio cable.
