Can I watch local channels on my HDTV?

Just got a HDTV TV, we don't have cable/satelite, just want to watch local channels. What do I need to get at the store?

  • Answer:

Nothing. If you have an HDTV, and no cable, it is just going to turn the screen into what is called a "letter box" - which means a black bar at the top and bottom of the screen. Unless you get cable, that is how your tv is going to show programs in HD.

TurboB - thanks. Well we tried last night using our digital converter box with our digital antena but the reception was, well, it was NOT HD (then we realized, duh, it's HD). It was grainy and the colors were not coming in...we tried different settings and balance, etc. So I figured I needed some type of HD antena/converter or something, but wanted to find out for sure!?!?

Get a good antenna if you are close to stations that broadcast HD.
