What jobs are available to someone with a bachelors degree in communication disorders?
-
I am considering changing my major to communication disorders and would like to go to graduate school after I receive my bachelors degree. But if in the end I decide not to go to graduate school, what are some possible jobs that I could get with just the bachelors degree in communication disorders?

Answer:
McDonalds. Target. The same as all degree holders are working right now. In my city, we had people with Masters degrees standing on line for hours to get a min wage job selling dippin dots off a card at the local water part. Your degree is worthless, right now. I'm sorry. I totally respect you for going to college and wanting to make a difference, but I am also a realist. You are not going to get a job where you can use your degree with just a bachelors. If you can afford to get a masters, I strongly suggest you do so.

I find your comment highly rude and discouraging to the millions of people in college right now. Just because a lot of people are working minimum wage jobs, does not make a degree worthless. Many people are going to college and finding jobs in their field. I'm sure some can not, but many do.

I'm sorry you feel that way. I mean no disrespect. I am simply pointing out that, sadly, even a college education is not a sure thing to getting a good job. I never stated that a degree was worthless. I simply said that, right now, a degree in anything is not a promise of a good, well paying job. I suggested you get a masters, if it is possible, as by the time you get that advanced degree the job market will be a lot more favorable.

I fully understand that getting a degree is not a sure thing to getting a job, but you are degrading it and yes, you did in fact state that a degree is worthless, read your post again. I'm tired of everyone having such a bad attitude about the job market. Yes, it sucks, but it will pick up eventually. I am considering getting a masters degree, but I'm not sure that even after I complete that program that the job market will be much better seeing as that I have 2 years left of undergrad, and only 2 of grad school. It will be much better in 4 years? ..Not sure about that.

you'd better check around before you change your major. Are you talking about communication disorders such as with autistic children or what?
tuppence
There are many things people do that deal with communication disorders. Communication disorders deals with anyone who has problems communicating whether it be due to hearing, speaking, swallowing, etc. After you have your masters degree you can become a speech-language pathologist, which helps people with their communication problems and comes up with treatment plans for them. They can work in either schools or health settings, and they can work with autistic children but that is most definitely not the only people they work with. May I ask what you mean by "you'd better check around before you change your major"? As in, I should figure out what jobs there are?...because that is what I am currently doing.

yeah, that's what I meant and it sounds like your head is on straight about this. You might check with private organizations about job opportunities as I have a feeling schools will go for those with masters and PhD's. Have you learned sign language? I was an ASL interpreter before arthritis made fingerspelling too difficult. There is ALWAYS a need for good interpreters.
tuppence
No I haven't learned sign language, but it has always been fascinating to me. I've had fellow classmates who needed interpreters and I always found myself watching them. It seems incredibly difficult though, not sure how good I'd be at it!!

It is difficult. That is why it is so needed. I started learning in my forties, so if I can do it, so can you! Many colleges have sign language courses. Try to find one that is actually taught by a deaf person. I know that sounds funny, but you will learn better sign and you will learn it way faster. If you do go that route, make it a point to get involved with the deaf as fast as you can. Please keep in mind that the profoundly deaf -- deafened in infancy or born that way -- have their own culture which you and I can never be a part of. That needs to be respected. And the one thing they absolutely hate is when hearing people act superior or treat them as if they are retarded. One of the most brilliant men I know is totaly deaf. They need things explained, but they run the range of intelligence the same way everyone else does.

I would never treat a deaf person as if they were slow. I can only imagine how frustrating that would be!! I fully understand that they are not less intelligent, they just cannot hear like you and I. With that being said, I would love to learn sign language and I know if I do continue in the communication disorders field that it would be a very beneficial skill to have. One of the classes I will be required to take deals with introducing us to the deaf culture and some sign language is taught, albeit probably just the basics. I'll probably decide from there if sign language is something I will be able to handle while still in school and working at the same time!! Can't spread myself too thin!
