Can a place refuse to hire you because of visible tattoos? Because I looked up the hiring policies and didn't see
-
Anything saying that if you had visible tattoos you couldn't get a job there. I looked it up and all it said was no OBSCENE/OFFENSIVE tattoos. And my tattoos are not obscene/offensive at all, they are religious. So I don't know what to do!!! I really need a job!!! The hiring manager told me that I wouldn't get the job because I have visible tattoos and not alot of people would like them because they are religious and ethniticity. I applied at McDonalds. Had to make this clear.

Answer:
For the record, I've got nothing against tattoos--I have none myself but know some with amazing tattoos. However, people do make assumptions about people with tattoos. I'm not saying it's fair--I'm saying that's what they do. No one here can really tell you whether the policy or the person's action is discriminatory or not. You'd need to ask a lawyer, but that's probably cost prohibitive and you there's probably not a case here. I'm thinking that because there's a difference between the policy and what manager said, he/she may just be using the tattoos as an excuse. Something else may have affected the hiring, especially since the othe manager has tattoos. Anyway, I'm sorry you didn't get the job. My advice would be to move on and apply elsewhere.

yes, businesses can refuse to hire employees on a basis of personal appearance; so long as that doesn't involve race, age, gender, or religion.

Absolutely, just as they can refuse to hire you if you're pierced or have guages anywhere. What did you think would happen when you mutilated yourself besides decrease your hirability and future income? And, if you can't get a job at McDonald's, that's pretty much the bottom of the chain. I suggest going through the process (painful I hear) of getting rid of all your visible tattoos if you want to be employed. And, just for a wake up call, religious tattoos are offensive, even obscene, to some people. And ethnic tattoos can be seen as racist. So, I guess the choice is express yourself or work...

While you may think you're the coolest person in town with a bunch of tattoos, not everyone likes them and they may not give off the image a company is trying to present to the public. In addition, a lot of people stereotype heavily tattooed people as being "trailer park trash," bikers, biker chicks or people who do not have good personal hygiene. This is something the tattooed generation is going to have to come to grips with in the years to come - you might lose out on a good job - or any job, even McDonald's - because of them, so you'd probably want to think twice about getting more.

I find religious tattoos highly offensive. See how easy that was? Any tattoo can potentially be offensive to anyone. Stores avoid that risk by not hiring people with tattoos or asking employees to cover the tattoos.

No one has to hire you for anything. And art is in the eye of the beholder. So while your tats may be the bomb to you, the hiring manager might not like them.

You'll get a hard time getting a job at fast food chains if you are tattooed. they can refuse to hire you. try to look for a call center job. they won't care if you're tattooed.

The employer has the right to refuse applicants with tattoos... much more if you have "gang" tattoos..

I'm not sure if there are any call centers around here

I never said my tatts were as you say the bomb. My tattoos are most religious, and thats why they said they couldn't hire me. Those are my only visible tattoos.
