Who are ghana's allies?

In last night's debate, Mitt Romney referred to 42 countries that are "America's allies"?

  • "We need to have strong allies. Our association and — and connection with our allies is essential to America’s strength. We’re the — the great nation that has allies, 42 allies and friends around the world." When questioned about it, the campaign released this list: http://dailycaller.com/2012/10/22/the-42-countries-romney-considers-americas-allies/ Isn't he leaving quite a few of our allies off the list? Is that good diplomacy?

  • Answer:

JaxK - I think Egypt is perhaps a better ally than Pakistan, you know the country that harbored BinLaden for five years. Everybody takes our money and, in a crunch, we have to wonder which way they will go.

Where's Ghana? There are a lot of African nations that love the USA. I think a few of them even sent troops to help us in the recent wars. Where's Georgia? Of all the shady Eastern European countries to mention why leave out the solid democracy? Pakistan is on the list? Why isn't India? I'd trust India as a friend over Pakistan any day of the week. That must be a typo. Not 1 South American nation was mentioned. Let's alienate our closest neighbors. No Jamaica either? Jamaica?!?!? Wow! Thanks for the post Goldie. Wow!

I suppose the definition of an ally would be appropriate. Last I heard, Obama didn't know if Egypt was an ally or not.

Afghanistan - now our ally.

"Isn't he leaving quite a few of our allies off the list? Is that good diplomacy?" Apparently he did, although he did mention/add "and friends around the world." lol That's not good, SO when President Obama decided to visit the Middle East and he flew to Egypt and to Saudi Arabia and to Turkey and Iraq. But Obama skipped Israel, what does that say about Obama's diplomacy. I know that you believe that to to say on worldwide broadcast that the U.S. "has allies, 42 allies and friends around the world." is bad diplomacy, BUT actually skipping a visit to one of our allies, is considerably worse, in your face worse! Obama's answer - If we're going to talk about trips that we've taken — when I was a candidate for office, first trip I took was to visit our troops. And when I went to Israel as a candidate. As a candidate! Not as a President. Over the past 4 years president Obama has traveled all over the world. He traveled all over the Middle East. But he hasn’t found time to visit our ally and friend, Israel.

Poor Romney but, after all, they talked him into this dog and pony show.

What a maroon. We have tight treaties with a few countries, pledging mutual defense and support, but in general, history tells us that countries do whatever is most convenient for their own interests. For example, Japan and the USA have many mutual treaties, but when it gets down to the nitty-gritty, they do whatever is in their best financial and security interests. For instance during the various conflicts in the middle-east, Japan very carefully does not say orr extend any support to the USA, as Japan gets most of its oil from the Middle East. Similarly if there ever was a conflict between the USA and China, Japan would find some excuse, like it's washing its hair that night. "Allies" is mainly a convenient and comfortable fiction, mainly yakked up by Republicans.
