  • I live in a city and we have our own police department I am 18 and was looking at some jobs and they have some entry level positions available as a police officer I was thinking of applying all they want is a High School diploma a clean record and a fit person I am fit and over 6 feet tall but I have heard that you need to go to like a training camp or something like that then after you graduate then you can start work if you guys can explain that to me and how life as a police officer is thanks

  • Answer:

Here's the deal: To advance, you will need more than highschool. Begin study in any field of law enforcement, even if you apply during this effort. It is the effort they will value. You will, of course, have to continue to make this effort at further education. It goes without saying that a Law Degree will be the desired de rigueur. A law degree can come l;ater after much effort on your part and will assure your continued advancement in the field.

You will need to pass a background check, a medical fitness check and psych testing. If you are accepted, you will need to attend a local or state police academy.

You should consider a criminal justice degree at a college.

It's a very hard job, every civilian looks at you funny, starting out you get all the awful jobs and terrible hours- directing traffic in the rain and in the winter, the overnight shift, funeral services, etc. The alcoholism, suicide and divorce rates for police is sky-high-- you're away from home at all hours, and you see the grim sides of life all the time. There is little room for advancement in most small departments, so you may be stuck with crossing-guard and night-shift duty for a looong time. It's an honorable profession but net exactly easy and definitely not for everyone.

As a civilian, I will make a couple of comments from cops that I know. It can be tediously boring at first with walking a beat or directing traffic. But, if you rise through the ranks, it can be very stimulating work. It can be dangerous at any given moment because you are in uniform which makes you a target for some bad characters. If you are assigned to a patrol car, with a partner, an ordinary traffic stop can be deadly. In NY, both cops get out of the patrol car, one on each side, the second cop on the passenger side hand on gun. We just lost a wonderful cop with 8 years service when he stopped an ex-con who shot him dead point blank. Then, the ex-con shot another driver and stole his car. I'm happy to say they after a massive manhunt, they caught him. But, if you improve yourself with a degree in Criminal Justice, you can rise up in the ranks, have men under your command, earn a good salary, and get a pension after 20 years. You will have the commaraderie of your brothers in blue, and a ready-made social network. On the negative side, on the home front, if you work homcide, or DEA, the work is dangerous and your hours are erratic making home life difficult if you marry a woman who isn't supportive of your work. Sometimes dealing with the undesirables in society gives you a cynical view of people and the rate of alchoholism and marital problems among some copis is high. On the positive side, you will be doing work that is a credit to the community, and will give you a sense of purpose and pride. I'm sure you can further your education and they will help you with tuition. The training will teach you how to defend yourself, how to use a gun effectively and safely (target practice). You sound physically fit and I'm sure it would not be any worse than boot camp is to an army volunteer. Talk to some cops and ask for their honest opinion. It's a good career if you are suited for it.
