  • Hello! I just bought a house and am trying to replace the dinning room fan/light with a light fixture. The current set up is the fan operated by the pull chain and the light operated by a dimmer switch. The wires feeding the fan are 2 black, 2 white, a green, and a red. I understand the basics that the green is ground and the red is a traveler. No matter what I try, the new light fixture either cannot be shut off or won't turn on. Any suggestions?

  • Answer:

The red is not necessarily a traveler. did you, by any chance, pay attention to which wire(s) was connected to the black lead and which wire(s) to the blue lead when you removed the fan? I suspect that if this is an older house, then the black wires are power wires, and the red lead is the switch leg - in which case, the light should be between the red and the 2 whites; to make it work with the dimmer.

All I know it reminds me when I tried to replace a ceiling lamp that had to be taken out when the ceiling was replaced after water damage. There were not enough matching lines and I finally, after weeks of asking and trying to see how to put the new light up, I called in an electrician. In five minutes they found that the contractor for the ceiling has pushed one wire up into the ceiling and I never did see that one. Maybe the lesson is, if it takes too much time, call in a pro.
