How can we give up our bad habits?

How do you change your driving habits on bad winter roads, and what about dealing with Transports do you give DETAILS..

  • give them extra room, and try and stay out of their way realizing they need extra room when the roads are bad,or do you treat them like any other day??

  • Answer:

Right now, I stay home. But when I had to drive on ice I imagined a glass of water on the dash and tried to make sure it did not spill. I know trucks need more room to stop, but I never saw that many where I drove.

why would they need any less room when the roads are good? after last winter, I take special care on off camber corners, particularly in cold temperatures.

I go slower....the wind almost blows my car off the road.

I ALWAYS keep a decent distance to other vehicles, regardless of driving conditions. Anyone with half a brain and a trip computer equipped vehicle and the ability to use both will soon realize that tailgating, cutting in close in front and risky overtaking just isn't bringing down the travel time by any worthwhile amount. The big trucks seem to have better visibility and pretty much the same traction as I have, so if it's snowing I'll happily stay behind and let them blaze the way. Odds are that under poor conditions it's only costing me something like 2-3 MPH anyhow, so not much to fuss about. I can make up for that by sipping my coffee in my car instead of having it by the counter when I stop - if I feel the need to. Much better then to break out when conditions improve, when I can expect to be 5-10 MPH faster(or more) than the big trucks. Well, OK. Sometimes we get these overseas trucks with dirt poor, often illegal tires. They might slow down to maybe 10-20 MPH under my comfort speed, or even pretty much get stuck at inclines. In that case, even I will start to look for a place to overtake fairly soon. I reckon if they're that slow, they're an accident waiting to happen anyhow, so better get out of the way.

On slippery roads, I drive slower. I try to make no sudden moves, slow easy steering and braking. Leave plenty of room in front to make sure I can stop in time. Also, try not to stop, if you can. Momentum is important. It can carry you through extra slippery areas. If you stop, you may skid and not move. Anticipate hills, you need the extra speed and momentum to get over the top. Finally, slow steady acceleration.

It had just occurred to me yesterday that it's been about a year since that happened, and I still haven't got everything put back away properly.
