Going skiing for the first time in a few weeks- what to buy?

  • I'm going skiing in a few weeks for the first time. Only going to be out there a few hours (like 3-4 hours max). I really don't want to spend a lot of money buying gear as money is tight for me. I'll be renting boots, skiis, and poles. I've got under armour cold compression leggings and long sleeve tshirt that I use for hunting, and a good waterproof coat. I definitely want to pick up some good socks and gloves, but I don't know what kind. Anything else that I will need for the few hours?

    Looks like you've got it covered, so to speak. Renting is good until you figure out if you actually like to do it. Just go to a sporting goods store, don't but in a ski area. Get waterproof, breathable gloves, so your hands don't get clammy.

You will probably want a good set of goggles with a tinted lens. The sun is really bright out there. Be super safe. It is really easy to pull or strain muscles in your legs...or worse. They should offer lessons...take them, and start on the bunny hill.

I don't know if the resort you go to will rent goggles. They do sell them. It will be best to ask some people that have them on or the staff. If you call a sporting store like "Dick's", they will help you pick a good one.

Don't forget the goggles - it can get extremely bright in the mountain sun. Don't worry too much about the socks.

Some kind of pull on cap. Double up on the socks. You might want to do that with the gloves, too. Get a simple knit pair for underneath your waterproof pair. Rent some insulated overalls.
