What is the google checkout?

Is there a craigslist Google Checkout scam happening where someone wants to purchase your listed item using checkout?

  • I received an home theatre, surround sound system from a gentleman in exchange for some money he owed me, I listed it on craigslist and then received a text message from someone who provided me their name and the name of a shipping company that would pick up the item once his payment cleared to me through google checkout. He wants my name and email address as well as my physical address to pick up the item once his payment clears through google checkout. seems like an odd scam, but i am nervous

He doesn't want MY money, he wants to SEND me money and then have his "private moving company" pick up the item. That's why I am confused. The scam seems backwards

No, it's not. He sends you a check which you must deposit in your account and wait to see the money from. Before you find out it's a bum check, his company has already gotten the item and left no forwarding address. Thus, I got one of these once and took it to the bank (uptown, a short walk away), where they took 15 minutes to realize they couldn't cash it. What you have there is a different version of another famous scam.

Hell no. It's not odd, it's typical. They have someone pick up your goods, and you don't get paid. Google checkout isn't an escrow service. And craigslist is an absolutely unregulated marketplace. All of your red flags are real. Don't fall for this.
