The South lost because the North outmanned and outclassed it at almost every point, militarily. However, the north also had the advantage of banking, factories and ships. They also had more railroads to move supplies, men and equipment. They had a larger Navy and a more experienced government along with a larger population of 22 million while the south had 9 million.
