How long will it take to become a pediatric oncology nurse?

  • Answer:

You would first have to take a four year program to get a Bachelor's Degree. You must also take into consideration prerequisite classes and the amount of time it takes to complete certificates and exams. It will take 4-5 years minimum to become a Pediatric Oncology Nurse.

You would have to go for your Bachelors in Science in Nursing (BSN). This is a four year program. Than once a nurse you would have to go for chemo certifications. You are looking at about 6 years of college.

Well you can expect to take nursing school which is 2-4 years if you go full time. 2 for an associates degree 4 for a bachelors. After nursing school you will need to find a hospital job on a medical surgical floor (sadly most hospitals want 1-2 years experience in long term care). Once you get into hospital on medical surgical you will need to work there a year or two, try transferrin to oncology, or to pediatrics, and network your way in. Pediatrics is very difficult to get into as it is not only a specialty but one many nurses want to be in and rarely leave. It can take 5-8 years if ever depending on the schooling you take and the hurdles you need to bear such as earning experience and finding an opening. Good luck!
