What are some of the most popular myths about IITians?
-
IITians are seen as a nerdy community by the general ignorant(?) public. Although, with my interaction with some IITians, I happened to realize, that they were people with the broadest perspective I had ever met and were not even close to being nerdy. I came to know that IITs, at least Bombay, features a huge host of activities in which people are involved. So, can someone point out some top myths about IITians and their lifestyle? If possible, please add facts contradicting the myth.

Answer:
These are all misconceptions, but quite widespread: IITians are socially inept geeks. (Reality: some are, but most arent.) IITians are only interested in technology. (Reality: some of the best amateur singers, actors, writers I've met have been people I met in IIT.) Most IITians go to the US. (Reality: actually many of them never go to the US and go on to take on important roles in Indian industry. Many who did go to the US in the 1990s are now back in India.) Most IITians go into the software sector. (Reality: There are many, many IITians in all kinds of diverse fields - Advertising Industry Exec, International Development (Charity/Aid) Consultant, Movie Director, Consumer Goods Marketing Exec, Medical Technology Scientist, Banker, Insurance Industry Exec - these are just examples of people from my close circle of friends.) IITians are low on emotional quotient. Logic trumps feelings. (Reality: Unsure. Someone should do a survey of spouses of IITians to see if this is true or just a misconception.) IITians think that the JEE rank is the most important achievement of their life. (Reality: Maybe this one is true! :-)

Ragging I don't know about other IITs but IITB has absolutely no "ragging". At max a few intro sessions. In fact there was a case of reverse ragging when a junior said, "Jeb mein 10,000 hai to sawaal pooch." The Dean is pretty strict about all this. There are no good-looking girls in IIT Not exactly true. But the ratio of boys:girls in my batch (IITB JEE 2008) was about 10:1. Before that it was around 12:1. Thankfully there is an increase in the number of girls in IIT. Some of them are quite attractive at even a normal level (there is something called IIT standard which is lower than a normal level of looks). IITians know everything about everything They don't. Some IITians can be really really ignorant. IITians can fix your computers/cars/ACs Sorry. We can't. Even the professors can't. All IITians drink, smoke Quite a few do. Yes. But not more than any other college. IITians study all the time No. A semester is for 4 months (only!) But with exams almost every other day (at least in mech) we're forced to study. But not all the time by any means. There are so many activities to keep us occupied. Even when there's no "organized" activity going on you can see a lot of guys playing some sort of sport or answering questions on quora :P IITians get INR 5 million jobs Media blows up everything. The average package in IIT Bombay was INR 7.5 lacs. If you exclude salaries in dollars it would be even less. The big numbers you see in the newspapers are the highest packages for graduates who get a job in the US at facebook, microsoft etc. You'll be surprised to know how many of them actually decline the offers. A USD 100,000 is not all that impressive if you think about it in comparison to an INR 2,000,000 job in India.

they are one of the best engineers and no one is better than them.. also if u r an iitian then u will surely get a job with a huge pay...

Myth: All IITians are passionate about engineering. Only a small fraction are truly interested in their core engineering fields and manage to develop/sustain it during undergrad. Most end up taking software, consulting or non-tech positions and perform well in their respective careers.

All IIT professors are way better than those in other, non-IIT colleges. A lot of professors really are better. But the proportion of high quality teachers is far lesser than what outsiders expect it to be. IIT professors are undeniably brilliant (some are extremely talented and dedicated researchers) - but not all of them are good teachers, in the sense that they invoke a sense of curiosity in their students to take a genuine interest in the subject they are teaching.

That IITians know everything about everything...i have encountered many people who think that, mostly people who project this in a negative way and make fun of you when you dont know about that...the thing to understand if those suckers can understand is that everybody reads the same thing from childhood till lets say 12th class if their stream is same.. And everybody is asked the same question in the entrance examinations, irrespective of whether they are going to qualify or not..the people who qualify have all the those qualities(measured relatively) tested by the entrance examinations and those who do not qualify fall short of hether and tether(noway i am suggesting that they can not develop what they lack or the measures of the entrance exam are the only scales which can be used to measure qualities..everybody is good at sth.. )again whether you qualify or not and if maintain the same stream.. Everybody is going to read the same thing whethwr in IITS or other colleges.. So what IITians know is pretty clear.. Its just that they can learn and understand faster(again not suggesting other people can not) but surely those who make a negative impression out of an IITian do not have any common sense ya unki sulag rahi hai.. Lol Those people have to understand that its not an IITian's fault that he or she is an IITian, its their fault that they are not IITians.
