How important is it to put in a sales pitch in a cover letter when applying for a position?
-
I'm applying for Quora and just gave me this advice: "The only glaring omission I see is a 'call to action'. What do you now expect Quora to do? Without this element, it is like making a sales pitch but never actually asking for the order. "I would appreciate it if we could get together to discuss how I might be able to help move Quora forward. Please contact me at ______." Something along those lines." Also, advised me this: "Yes, they are common. I wouldn't call them sales pitches; you're just asking to move the process to the next level.I would love the opportunity to discuss this further, either over the phone or in person. You may reach me at EMAIL ADDRESS or PHONE NUMBER. Thanks for your consideration, and I hope to hear from you soon." I'm just wondering - how important is it? I only have experience with applying for college/grad school, and personal statements for those usually don't have a sales pitch. Also - does anyone have any specific examples of them in cover letters?

Answer:
I wouldn't call it a sales pitch, although you are selling yourself in the cover letter. Well actually, you are selling the RESUME to them and showing why they should continue to read. So after you have shown why you're interested and why you'd be a great fit, close strong at the end by quickly explaining how your experience will help you with the job and what the benefits are for them. And always ask for the interview at the end, as that is your next objective in the hiring process.

Your goal with either your resume or your cover letter is just to get an interview. It definitely helps to have a strong close to make the letter stand out, but it doesn't need to be long. Caroline's example is really all you need: I would love the opportunity to discuss this further, either over the phone or in person. You may reach me at EMAIL ADDRESS or PHONE NUMBER. Thanks for your consideration, and I hope to hear from you soon.
