How to build my career?

How can I build a career in Automotive Electronics?

  • I am currently pursuing my engineering in Electronics. How can I build a career in Automotive Electronics? Which universities (gloabally) offer Masters Programs in Automotive Electronics? How does one get there?

  • Answer:

If you are pursuing your engineering in Electronics then you are on the right track already. Automotive electronics are simply electronics made for auto-mobiles. They are the same components that are used in other machines or devices like Micro controllers, Temperature sensors, resistors etc. and these are the electronic components that you take knowledge about when you are in your engineering. During engineering learn in such a way so that you are proficient about micro controllers and embedded systems and their programming. Usually the programming is in C language, Assembly language or embedded C language and C++ will help you if you have to deal with OOPS. Also it will be good if you have a strong knowledge of electronic hardware. There is a lot of RTOS(Real Time Operating System) involved in high end automotive systems these days so clear your concepts of operating systems as well. Model based design is also getting a foot in the automotive industry so learn model designing tools like MATLAB and Rhapsody and for instrumentation you can learn tools like Labview. So develop a decent level knowledge of the subjects I mentioned. Now the above subjects are the ones which probably can get you a job in any company which deals in embedded so I would like to mention some protocols and tools used in the core automotive electronics and software field. It will be great if you get knowledge about communication protocols like CAN/LIN/MOST/Flexray. I would emphasize on CAN the most here as it is quite popular. Also basic knowledge of some vehicle simulation tools like Vector CANoe and Intrepid Vspy will be welcomed. Vector CANoe tool is a rage among companies which deal in automotive products. The good thing is that manuals and demo versions are available on their website and you can use them for your learning. A point I would like to mention here is that when learning CANoe you will deal with CAPL scripting which is used for scripting the ECU behaviour so pay attention to it. If you know the above protocols and tools automotive companies will welcome you with arms wide open. To be frank I do not think you need an MS degree for getting into the Automotive field but if you want to pursue higher studies in Automotive field then I would prefer German universities for that. But if you plan to get a job after your bachelors then I would say that you go into Tier 2 companies like Bosch, Delphi, Mando, Magneti Marelli etc. these are good product based companies and will provide you to discover the Automotive world like anything. If suppose you don't get the above companies many Indian Tier 3 company like TCS, Infosys etc. have automotive projects with them and so you can work in these companies. After you have gained enough experience the doors of heaven are open for you. There are many domains in the Automotive Field For Ex- Clusters, Powertrain, Suspension, Engine Management, Body Control Modules etc. so once you are in, try working in all of them after having knowledge of the previous domain. That is all I have for you.

I am no sure Question is intended to Indian point of view or not. but I will answer as Automotive Electronics Engineer. First thing lokk for job in following companies through campus interviews Bosch, KPIT, Continental etc 2. If you are not selcted then join Embedded engineering diploma programs throgh CDac or Vector Hydrabad. There are other institute also 3.Work on German language skills, as there are so many german automotive companies off shore development center in India. If know German you will hav advantage 4. Try to go through CAN protocol, this ials most comman feature used Best of luck. Hope youbfind this answer useful

I think u must apply for a job first in this field. Here experience does matter a lot. Try to focus on the market trends and last but not the least master the concepts of technology behind.
