What is it like to be a black police officer?

  • It seems that police is hurled daily with many accusations, among them targeting African Americans. A curious question then appeared- to me -I've never encountered an African american police officer. What is it like to be a police officer and to be black?

  • Answer:

Whilst I can't give a answer for Officers in the U.S.A., there are several indigenous Officers here in Perth, Western Australia. Unfortunately, they seem to get abuse from members of their own race - names like 'coconut' are common (black on the outside, white on the inside). Or, they are often asked to 'help out' by not referring charges & giving cautions instead (especially as aboriginals have extended families - the Officer may be a 2nd cousin/ Wife's Uncle etc). Perth is the fastest growing city in Australia (1 million people have moved here in the past 10 years) and the number of immigrants has exploded (especially refugee/ asylum seekers). Hence, WA Police are actively recruiting those with diverse backgrounds - Muslim, Sikh, or Hindu. There is currently one Police Officer wearing a Hijab and one wearing a Turban. Needless to say, they get a few looks...not only from members of the public, but from members of our Police Force. Whilst I wouldn't say our organisation is racist, there is the odd Officer with racist views (as with any large organisation). As diversity training officer at the Police Academy, I train new recruits on issues relating to aboriginals & cultural diversity -trying to challenge assumptions and stereotypes. Having members of each race/ religion in our Police certainly helps break the cultural barrier for fellow Police and members of the public. For more information on my job, check out

I am Caucasian but have worked with many wonderful, competent black officers.A black officer dealing with a Caucasian person usually has no problem and in general the public respects them. The problem comes in when a black officer has to deal with a black offender.  Most black people respect any police officer's race. However, there is a large portion of the black population which does not respect officers, especially black officers. These people are the thugs and troublemakers who respect no one and especially disrespect black officers. I have heard blacks call black officers Uncle Tom, Nigger, Coon and every other slang name you have ever heard. That is because these thugs are hateful and see black officers as traitors to the black race.I remember giving out assignments and a lot of times I would hear a deputy groan out loud when he was assigned to a black project or predominantly black area. To sum it up in one word I have found that most black officers just want to do their jobs and that word is FRUSTRATION.Good Day!
