What is the best way to find a job in a start-up of India?
-
In India there are million of start-ups, how to find jobs (other then job portal of http://jobs.yourstory.in/jobs/listing, https://jobs.hasgeek.com/, http://dreamstarts.in/, http://job.venturehire.co etc) and if we find a job through any way then what should be the proper way to apply?

Answer:
Look at various startups and make a shortlist of the ones you admire. Find their founders emails and send them an email indicating how you can add value to the startup - coding, marketing, customer support etc with something (no matter how small) to demonstrate your ability to do so (Github profile, a personal blog with nice article, prior startup experience) Engage with the founders who reply. Job boards are OK but founders love it when someone takes the time to personally research their startups and write a strategic (doesn't have to be long, 1 para is good) email indicating how they can add value. Even if they aren't hiring right now, they'll know to get back to you in future if they need help.

Apart from the links that are already mentioned in the Question description, here are some more. http://swaroopch.com/2009/03/11/where-to-find-startup-jobs-in-india/ http://www.f6s.com/jobs https://angel.co/jobs http://www.ideas.economictimes.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=51&Itemid=146 http://higher.headstart.in/ Also networking at Startup related events helps a lot, as not all startups post their jobs on these sites. They mainly hire through referrals. Events like: Startup Saturdays, Open Coffee Club, echai, The Indus Entrepreneur, Nasscom Product Conclave, etc. You can also get in touch with the manager of any co-working space in your city (if any - google it up), and see if there is any need in any of the occupied or past startups. But these will be very early stage startups. Anyway a general guideline to approach would be. Choose the companies that are working on stuff that's aligned to your interest and vision. Create a short but awesome resume and update your linkedin profile well. Do a research on how to project yourself well. If you could find any link with the founder/employee of the company, that'd be a great start. Any far away link also could work. Use Linkedin (paid upgrade if needed) to find a link that can introduce you or connect you with them. Else apply directly as given on the posting. Prepare and present yourself well in your Interview/Discussions. Start-ups, especially in India, are generally welcoming to good candidates, as they are always in short supply and not many look up to work at Startups for various reasons. So you'd be fine. And yeah, all the best.... :-)

Following is a summary of recruitment, done by most of the startups founders I have met in last two years. Entrepreneur community in Delhi NCR region is a close-knit one, and the fellow entrepreneurs have always been kind enough to share their recruitment experiences â in a candid manner :) Regardless of the profile, most of the startups generally work in the following manner while recruiting: (PS: following is for recruitment of full-time employees, and not interns. Secondly, the points are for bootstrapped startups, and not funded ones â which have enough cash). Startups do not have money to pay for a person, who can only do one specific thing. They are looking for a generalist, with experience/specialization in one domain. This is a win-win for both employer and employee. The employee is able to exploit and experiment with his interests and capabilities, and choose the right career path for himself. Most of the recruitment is done through referrals. This is the reason founder often go to their ex-employers and colleges. Startups do not have time / resources to train their recruits, or have an orientation day. You are on job, the moment, you enter into the office. Also, there is no hand-holding, and one has to think independently and solve problems. Some startups prefer male employees over females. Most of the startups will not acknowledge this,as we live in a hypocritical society. You can not ask a female employee to work till late (her family won't approve it), while in reality there are no office timing in a startups. Also, many startups won't be happy to pay salary during maternity leave, as they are always cash-crunched. Person who talks about high salary, is a big-NO. Startups generally hire bachelors, as they can sustain in low monetary compensation (as compared to industry standards) + ESOPs. That's the reason they miss out the rock-stars, who are working at high salaries in MNCs (unless they come on a cut). Also, B-school graduates find it tough to work with these startups, because of peer-pressure. So, how to get a job in a startup? Following might help: Do your SWOT. Find out what's your passion is, and what work excites you to do it for hours, without cribbing. Find startups where you can work on your passion. You can visit your college alumni site and know the founders. another way to find industry-specific jobs is to visit https://angel.co/ , http://www.f6s.com/ or http://yspages.com/browse/company/ Can you help the startup in their main business operations? and not the support service? e.g. If how are a HR guy, you are more needed in a recruitment startup, as others might not have a HR department. Call / write to the founder. Tell him you want to meet him, and then go meet him. Even if he doesn't hire you, he can refer you to other startups (and this referral works). Tell them you are experienced. More than your educational qualification, your experience in a similar role / company will work here (remember, a startup will not have time to train you). Don't bluff, as the other person is thinking on this domain 24X7, and will know about it in a minute. Tell them your expectations. What growth and monetary compensation you are looking at, should be told before hand, Also, let your employers know if you cannot work beyond office hours. If you are capable, then you will be hired at any cost. Though make sure you follow point # 5 before point # 6. Now that you got the job, what's next? Be an 'A - Category' employee. Mediocre ones do not stay there for long. Try to understand job profile of your boss, copy it and make him redundant. The moment your boss will have confidence in you, you will get the next opportunity. Bring solutions, not problems. There are two types of employees . #1: they tell their bosses that there is a problem. #2: they tell their bosses that there is a problem, these are the options to solve it, and here's their logic to solve it.... we all know who will be the next boss, with the potential of becoming a co-founder. All the best!

Though there are multiple platforms which can help (most being listed below) however I still think it's a big pain point for most job-seekers: To decide on the stage (<10 employees, seed/angel, Series A/B, late stage) or the category/categories of startup they would be interested in To find/discover a few suited startups in those categories To get interviews at the above startups in a short time period, and thus get hired To ensure that he/she gets the best role/compensation To solve the above pain points we started TalentPad, a transparent and efficient marketplace, which helps techies and product managers get their desired job in a matter of days. What we do is we aggregate the supply of qualified people, who're interested in joining a startup, and we present this qualified and highly curated pool in front of 200+ funded tech. startups, for a time window of a week. Because of the time pressure along with extremely high candidate quality, companies take an action during the period of the week. To ensure transparency and efficiency, all the information is presented to companies online and they take all actions online. As a result, candidate gets visibility across 200+ startups in a week, thus getting anywhere between 5 to 15 interviews. He/she gets all details upfront including the role, compensation and other details. Post which, the candidate is presented with relevant details about the startup (like culture, mission/vision, team, concept etc.) and he/she is free to decide where they would want to interview. Because of the competitive pressure, both companies and candidates try to interview with their preferred companies/candidates - thus leading to a faster turnaround. Hence reducing the 'time to hire' for a startup and 'time to get hired' for a candidate. Would love for you to try us out at http://www.talentpad.com. First of all you need to be aware about the startup work culture as it can be completely different from that of regular corporate/private/government jobs. Startup jobs require a lot of commitment and self motivation to get things done. Assuming you have thought of all these issues, there are plenty of job sites available for startup jobs. However, the issue is that most of the aspirants get a dead silence after applying through all these sites. I am putting together a http://www.howtolaunchstartup.com that will attempt to address all issues related to startups such as online and offline training, startup jobs, recruitment, other related services such as technology advise, legal advise etc. You may try and upload your profile on my portal http://www.howtolaunchstartup.com and see what kind of response you get from startups. Good luck in your job search.

Figure out the following things: Which domain excites you Where your knowledge/ expertise lies in What are the start ups working in that domain Location where you are good to work at (I believe this should be something least bothered about) In case it is a early stage company (5-30 employees) you can directly write to the founder via any kind of social channel (Twitter/ FB/ Quora). If it is a bigger company, you can write to their HR directly. Share why you think you will be a right fit to join the company & what you can bring on to the table. I majorly look for self-motivated people & very enthusiastic individuals who strongly believe in them. PS - Working in a start up is not a easy thing. Founders expect you to work the same way as they do. Put 100% efforts in getting things done with out any lenience. And you will be also rewarded in the same way.
