Any FLVS Students available?

Middle School Teachers: Do you or your school make available to students the book The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky?

  • Recently in Glen Ellyn, IL, The Perks of Being a Wallflower was banned at Hadley Junior High School. It has now been reinstated. Though the book was not part of the required curriculum, students could choose it for independent reading and/or for literature circles. Some parents thought it was inappropriate for all 8th graders and should not be in the school library or in any classroom libraries. We are trying to get a sense of how many middle schools and middle school teachers have been making this book available to their students. Any information you could provide - grade you teach, how long the book has been available in your room and/or school, etc. - would be helpful. Thank you!

  • Answer:

I don't have it in my classroom library, and I don't think it is in our school library.  My daughter and I read it when she was in 7th grade.  It wasn't either of our favorite books ever, but I don't think it was damaging.  If I had bought it as an actual book, rather than as an ebook, it probably would be in my classroom library now.

I would, if I taught Language Arts. I do teach middle school, though. I don't see anything wrong with the book, but there are parents in my area who might.
