What are some good animation colleges?

What colleges and courses are available in India for someone who is interested in the animation field?

  • I'd like to be in animation field. I am an engineering graduate. I've Googled it but every course says that I need to have a BFA. Should I just start with BFA and then do MFA? Is there any diploma course that I can start with at a good college (not the private institutes, they are too expensive for me)? I am good at sketching and 2D, I want to learn 3D (game design).

  • Answer:

You say you are a graduate, do you mean a B.A.? How serious is your desire? Is this your life's ambition? Are you willing to climb the ladder, ie prove yourself through your actions? There are a number of places of great opportunity in India, but hard experience has taught such places to be wary - so many people say they have great ambition but once they recieve a regular check many turn out to be satisfied and uninterested in greater and greater challenges. The exceptions to this are what studios want to seek out - people who will throw themselves at their work, which is quite hard (worse, at beginning levels it's tedious), but who stick with it and who become ever more valuable experts. For such people, a degree means less than being trustworthy, dilligent, self-motivated, hard working, intelligent and versatile. Those people can find themselves moving from an entry level position to almost any level in just a few years. The film industry, particularly visual effects, is a meritocracy more about getting the job done than anything. People who become solutions and a true craftsman's spirit can end up writing their own ticket. Studios are always trying people out to see if they should be fast-tracked. Sometimes being selected in your company for an onerous task is a test to see how you do. Often it's quickest to move upwards in a field related to your exact goal and then make a lateral move once you are a valued expert. For instance as a visual effects supervisor shifting over to, say, game design, is much easier (should I desire to do so.) I've already proven my capabilities in production and mastery of digital media. In a country like India where there is so much competition for jobs a straight line may not be your best course. Is this all applicable to you? If so, send me a note.

Animation is really a great option to pursue as a career option. There are many colleges best known for 3D animation and Graphics Designing. My bro is also pursuing career in 3D animation and he is really doing well and now he also got job. I will suggest you to go for institutes rather than colleges. Not every college has high fee structure, my bro is in Zee Institute of Creative Arts and their fee structure is also quite decent. You can call and ask them for the details. http://www.zica.org/enquiry.html. They have many courses including certifications course, professional courses, PG courses and Graduate Courses.

There are many animation colleges in India from where you can do the animation course. But as to make career in animation field you need to be excellent in sketching, as it is the base, what you have in your mind you need to draw it to show your idea to others. Choose a course which includes sketching as well as other aspects of the animation also. If you go for fine art then you would learn only sketching. You need to learn animation also, so go for such combination. And yes, with theory you require practical experience also so look for a college who provides practical experience to their students like internship where you actually know how the industry works. And yes, experienced faculties and college infrastructure and one of the most important thing UGC recognised degree. P. A. Inamdar college of visual effects design and art, has these qualities. It is one of the best animation college from Oxford of the east,  PUNE. You should enquire for it,  just visit website http://www.veda-edu.com.
