Making free e-learning/how-to videos a full time business?
-
We are a bunch of young professionals who are inclined towards education and public speaking. We are thinking of creating a company that creates and publishes videos to explain basics of different things . Questions can be from any domain - marketing, social media, politics, music, self help etc . E.g - How can you get a pilot license in India? How to overcome your fear of public speaking ? Why should you consider choosing politics as your career ? What is the right way to eat Dosa in India ? How is a currency's value defined ? How to begin coding ? Why should you spend time on making friends? .... and so on. We'll focus on satisfying the intellectual curiosity of people. BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE - Since youtube has such a huge user base, we will focus on branding our channel as a universal learning portal and get as many fans/subscribers as we can. All our videos would be free (on youtube) as we want to promote learning online. The current sources of income for the business that we have thought of are: - Youtube ads (youtube pays 1-5$ per 1000views) - Ads on our own website. We will drive users from our videos to the website. Add more resources of the website or start a text blog to go with the videos. - Affiliate marketing. (e.g. giving a link of book in the description and telling people to buy the book for learning more) - Sponsored content (featuring/reviewing others on the channel) Some issues : 1. If we look at India's low internet speed, should it be a big concern for us ? 2. People do spend time on music videos. Will content videos appeal to masses? 3. We guys have experience in public speaking, ideas, delivery, content creation etc. Will it make sense to quit our jobs and work full time on this business ? 4. How much potential do you see in this business? 5. Will it make sense to do join accelerator program or look for seed fund investor before venturing into it full time ? 6. What can be the possible obstacles in this business ? Your criticism, reviews, guidance and suggestions will be really appreciated.

Answer:
The company which is already doing this is : http://www.1learning.co/. They shoot and create videos to adress the same need which you are trying to do and are in the business for 1.5 yrs as I know. The questions are : Differentiation :What will you do differently from what they have already accomplished or can quickly iterate. Team strength : How can your team out run those who are already in the game with money, team and investor backing. Entry Barrier : What is the entry barrier you can create ? One of the worst advise you can get is : Pursue business while you are still in job. It just doesnt fucking work. Majority of founders who work full time have difficulty doing sustainability and fundability answers. If I am an investor ,why should i bet my money on your business if you are not even betting your job on it. Its totally against the spirit of entrepreneurship. Technology businesses have so much complexity that even if you work 16 hrs a day as founders , it will take 3 years to just to get the wheels rolling. Accelerators in my opinion are not entirely *USELESS*, they give employment to the sons, son in laws of media houses or large academic institute deans. Nothing teaches business like business. Learn business by doing it, not masturbating about it The best bet is to get a smart investor ( One who funds and mentors you to success) or a billionaire politician mother in law whose name will get you all the success example Robert Vadra

There is simply no need for you to quit your jobs. Do that once you have no other option and the business brings in more income than your job does or at least is trending that way. This reminds me of the 5min videos business model. http://www.5minmedia.com/VideoLibrary This company was bought by AOL. You should read their story: http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/28/aol-5min/ The biggest challenge is credibility. Why should I believe your answers? A large portion of your answers could likely be reading aloud to your viewers an article found on Quora. ;) I don't trust articles on http://www.ehow.com They tend to have insufficient information.

If you are targeting Indian content and want to make it awesome and also free. Man, we badly need you. The current ones are not really good. There are tens and thousands of how-to/ DIY videos on the net, so differentiation is unquestionably #1 issue to address. As anyone would agree - "Content is King." So, if you have the best one with you, there is no reason why Indian players cant fare well. This is proved byhttp://www.youtube.com/user/TheViralFever guys. BUT, If you are targeting the masses, it is not going to be an easy run. Indian users are like multiple niche segments. So, if you want to cater to the needs of all/most of them, then you will have to deal with a lot of content. Monetization: Indian users paying for content is unlikely to happen in the near future. So, one has to go free. It would be ideal to explore various revenue sources than completely relying on Youtube ads. For instance, licensing your content to TV. Popular Tech sites like theverge and cnet follow this strategy. You can license your content for a particular show/channel by which, it will telecasted first on TV and then goes to your channel. Ultimately, it is how one implements the idea that decides its success.
