What are some good TV shows for me?

What is a good TV show for me to start watching? My favourite shows are: Doctor Who, Glee, Big Bang Theory and Modern Family. Other shows that I have enjoyed in the past five years or so have been: Flash Forward, Heroes, My Family and House. I dislike reality TV, sports and TV with graphic violence

  • Don't worry, I have seen Friends :) I just listed my recent favorites. Same goes for Sex and the City. I'm most excited about Torchwood and 7 Days, thank you. I have an Apple TV as well as NetFlix so I'll figure out a way to watch it. Two votes for White Collar, as well as Californication. I will check them both out. Lie To Me sounds intruiging. My husband has assured me that I won't enjoy Entourage, so I will skip that. I have zero problems with nudity and the like. I just don't enjoy watching people get graphically and violently raped/ murdered/ tortured, week in and week out. I'd rather watch people get exterminated by Daleks or deleted by cybermen. Or worse, touched by a weeping angel.

Doctor Who, you said! Well then let me introduce "Torchwood" to you, if you haven't already seen it. It was a modern spin-off of Doctor Who, but works as a total standalone (There are just some references made that doesn't have anything to do with this series). It's not running anymore, but I'm sure you either can find a way (utorrent is a great tool) to get it! (And there's maybe a DVD-box too). It probably isn't so well-known outside Uk (or maybe the US). At least it was never on in Sweden, so the only practical way to get it was from the net for me! And if you like the time-travell/paradox fix the past/future stories like "Flash Forward" then look no further(back) than 7 days.

(Comedy in a Medical Setting) Absolutely hilarious, light hearted. Modern-family like. This isn't very violent at all & it's quite interesting. Some people compare the observations & deductions to Dr. House's. But I think ... it's quite different and absolutely intriguing. Great acting by Tim Roth. Give this a skip if nudity is an issue. It can be *quite* explicit, specially at the beginning. Once the story starts spinning- you overlook it- it's entertaining but has got really dark/messy undertones. Packed to The Rafters Recently started following it on TV. It's a hit Aussie TV series. Quite entertaining. Sheer brilliance! Only countable number of episodes out as yet. Better than the movies. I'd encourage you to start with this one! Apart from these I really like White Collar, Huge House M.D. fan, easily my favorite series (which you have already seen), Sex & The City (it is not extremely girlie, based on relationships but I understand that will interest girls/women more :P), Entourage (nothing so great, purely entertaining. The storyline comes into play only after 1/2/ a couple of seasons. But it's totally worth watching for Jeremy Piven as Ari Gold, among the other things).

Breaking Bad It's a fantastic show. Give it some time in the beginning for the story to completely set in. It has excellent storytelling, all credits to the writers... Bryan Cranston gives a terrific performance. Each episode is amazingly well paced... Watch if you like something that is a bit different from the usual fare.

I would like to add two series in addition to the ones suggested here. These are old ones (of the late 80s and early 90s)- 1.     Considered during the 90s and early 2000s as the greatest sitcom ever, and still considered the second greatest sitcom of all time. Humorous, entertaining and superb acting. 2. Sherlock Holmes (1984-1994)     This series is based on the original book. It includes 41 of the 56 stories of the book. If you've read the book, or have ever wanted to read it - this would be a treat. Awesome acting and great direction.

Arrested Development (nice characters, awesome comedy and probably the highest rated comedy on IMDB) LOST - (The end sucks, the journey through the seasons is amazing) Californication - (Hank Moody and his love for getting into trouble, of all kinds) Prison Break

Wait... how have you not watched FRIENDS yet? It is by far the best sit-comedy I have ever, EVER watched. Believe me, How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory and Modern Family are NOTHING compared to FRIENDS! Apart from that, you could try White Collar or Suits. They aren't dark TV-shows, but rather witty and involve a main plot and a sub-plot. Well written and well acted. And then there is Californication and Entourage. There is no, or very less story line. It's more about the 'hunks' or 'dudes' living wasted lifes, and about cars and chicks and the bling.

Sherlock If you loved House, you'll love this. House of Cards An absolutely amazing political drama. Seinfeld The show about nothing, which is arguably the best show of all time. Suits An amazing legal drama with twists and turns that will leave you on the edge of your seat. Death Note If you want to try Anime. Start with THIS. Death note is smart, rivetting and exhilarating. Every episode will leave you wanting for more. This is some seriously good and well executed stuff. You could also try Community, HIMYM, Arrested Development, Silicon Valley, Goldbergs, Downton Abbey etc

Weird that nobody here mentioned community : It's a show with 'meta' as one of the central themes. Go Charlie Kauffman yourself . A 'hidden' show that very few people are aware of : Freaks and Geeks was a show in the late 80's that sadly lasted only one season .Had a lot of future 'stars'  such as Seth Rogen and James Franco. Suits , a show about this genius guy who cons his way into a law firm ,quite entertaining as compared to most lawyer shows : Newsroom : This show covers an anchor and his team as they try to bring the real news back to TV . Being coherent with most recent world events makes it even more exciting.

You already got some of these recommendations but since I like a lot of the same shows as you and am a Whovian :) I thought I'd take a stab: (1) unconventional comedies: Community and Arrested Development (2) Scifi: Firefly; you can also never go wrong with Star Trek (3) Fantasy: Supernatural-amazing show,  though it takes a season to realllllly get into the show and it's mythology and I've noticed a lot of overlap from the Doctor Who fandom. It's in its 9th season and is truly quite awesome.  (4) sitcomy or regular comedies: HIMYM, Raising Hope  (5) Mockumentary style comedy- Parks and Recreation  (6) classic comedy- Mash and Frasier ( I think its old enough and classic enough now)  (7) Dramedies- Castle and White Collar (both have great actors and interesting plotlines though I've fallen behind on White Collar).....Also Bones but well the bodies are a lil gory so uhm may not be for you. (8) drama- The Blacklist (the lead actress is wishywashy at times but James Spader is out of this world.  Positively billiant!) I think all are on Netflix except Mash and Blacklist is on Hulu since it's new. .. you can usually get Mash from your local library on DVDs. Enjoy discovering some fun new shows :)
