How do you keep track of your receipts?

I personally put each receipt in a box on my desk and clean it out once a month matching them to my bank account statement. I then print (or save to my personal computer) my monthly statement to file and throw out the receipts that do not fit one of the three categories below. You do not need to keep all of your receipts. The only time that you should keep a bill or receipt: You are making a purchase in cash or a cash equivalent that is not associated with a personal financial account: Money Order, Prepaid Debit/Credit Card, Gift Certificate, or Gift Card. The purchase is a separate expenditure from your budgeted bills that relates directly to your home improvement/maintenance, automobile repair/purchase, business expense, or healthcare. You intend to return the item, reverse the transaction, or use this information as proof of purchase in the future. Any other type of payment creates a transaction in an account to be reviewed or presented for accounting as needed. If you are serious about keeping proof of all of your receipts/bills then your best friend is a ledger. If you keep an accounting of each of your payments on a ledger that corresponds with your financial accounts then you will never have to keep all of those extra receipts/bills.
