Why isn't there any famous music chart for India?

  • Take for example http://www.billboard.com/charts, http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chart/singles, http://nztop40.co.nz/, http://www.ariacharts.com.au/. I can't see any reliable such chart for Indian music except for some websites like smashhits.  India isn't even included in this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_albums_by_country. What's the reason? Why are charts not so famous in India? EDIT: 1. I am not suggesting that charts would include only Bollywood music. It might include independent artists too. My question is why it doesn't exist already? 2. Also, I am not suggesting that the music in the aforementioned charts is better than those not charted. So, a place in these charts doesn't imply that they have a better musical composition. EDIT 2: With regards to an answer that says that such list would only motivate people (including filmmakers) to make 'hit' music, this was my response: The music that we already are listening to is the very type of music that has been made to become a hit. Why would any filmmaker not want their songs to be a hit? Why do you think they copy some songs shamelessly, and put them in their movies? Further, I would like to point out some benefits that might come out from creating a nation-wide chart: 1. One could only include those songs in this list that have not been copied from some other music. This way, there's a good chance that people start making original music instead of copying stuff. 2. This list would include music from South (Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam), as well as North and all other states too.  People of India will know what's going on in these places, and I think this will unite us even more. Imagine yourself striking a conversation with a stranger on a train about a song that you liked in their language. Isn't that awesome? 3. I think this would be a chance for independent artists rise up to fame. Since we can see which of those artists have more sales in India, this would definitely encourage bands, and other classical artists to make more music instead of giving up, because there would be something that's finally recognizing them for what they are. How do you think artists rise up to fame in US and UK? How do you think they go from being no one to Grammy award winners? Not all that comes from charts, but I think charts, if not anything more, at least motivate them to make better music once they start getting recognition. Sure, some music still might not get recognized, such music which isn't popular with everyone. But that comes later, and problem can be solved too.

  • Answer:

Comparing Bollywood with others, the one thing which one clearly understands is that in other countries ,the artists release their own albums ,which if liked by the public ,go viral;whereas in India, either movies are utilized for popularizing songs or vice versa.Logically, music charts are meant for albums(till date, this is my understanding of music charts). In India,we are more often tempted by the dramatization of the song rather than the music(here music means the songs which are on almost everybody's lips). This does not mean that we don't have soul relaxing or lyrically profound music, but generally such songs are not given a heed by a majority of the Indian people.I haven't witnessed any Indian album topping the international charts except Exotic(Lord Save Me) or any other glamourized by an actor or actress.   Jo Dikhta Hai Wai Bikta Hai.

Would you really like to listen to something that has the words 'top 40' associated with it? The lists help marketers more than the audiences. The classics didn't garner cult following by featuring on lists. Heterogeneity is lost when such lists are made as everyone scrambles to make music that's a 'hit'. Sure its ok to have party mixes and edits. But the music that I would really wish to collect probably wouldn't feature on some ever-changing list.

Thanks for the A2A 1. Music isn't a priority in this country Well, there doesn't exist a popular chart in India mainly because, lets face it, music doesn't get people going here in like some other (developed) countries. The average Indian doesn't listen to music for a whole day. This maybe either because of lack of facilities - like a radio or an I Pod. 2. The lingual diversity Most of the countries which were mentioned by you in your questions were all countries in which one language was overwhelmingly spoken by the majority. Whereas in India, there are numerous languages spread over a huge area of land. So it is very difficult to take a consensus on how wide a song has reached. 3. Lack Of Quality Music The music which appeals to the majority in India, sucks. Plain , old sucks. There are songs like "Jai Ho" which aren't that great , yet promoted relentlessly by companies for hidden agendas of their own. Nailing down one chart for India would really be pointless because people will try to influence those who maintain these charts by cash etc...you know how it works here..
