How well are you supposed to rinse your mouth out after brushing?

Am I supposed to rinse my cat's mouth after brushing her teeth?

  • I bought some Nylabone brand pet toothpaste for my cat. I haven't tried it yet. It has some ingredients that don't sound very healthy for her to swallow, but am I supposed to rinse her mouth somehow? I'm a bit confused...

  • Answer:

I agree that any cat toothpaste will be safe for a cat to digest... However, after you brush your cat's teeth, it shouldn't be your first concern.  You would have proven yourself to have an honest-to-god superpower! Congratulations, but with great power comes great responsibility.  You must learn how to channel your strength to serve the greater good!

You can rinse your cat's mouth, if he/she lets you. Otherwise, as long as you have bought a good brand cat toothpaste, NOT human, the cat and time will automatically rinse off the toothpaste.

The way cat toothpaste works is not the same as it does for people. When we brush our teeth the purpose is to use the paste and brush to scrub away plaque. When you brush your cat's teeth you are not scrubbing them. The paste works as a coating that repels food and and plaque from sticking to the teeth.  Rinsing is not required.
