What does New Age music mean?

Do babies have a natural aptitude for music?

  • My 5-month old has always shown a strong interest in music.  I am a singer who also plays the flute and I like singing all kinds of music - Hindi film music, Hindustani classical music, Carnatic classical music, etc.  I also play these on the flute.  Since the day my baby was born, she has always had a strong affinity for music - or so it seems to me.  What I mean is the second I start singing or playing the flute, she will stop doing everything else (playing, crying, making random noise, reaching for a toy, etc.) and listen in rapt attention to what I am singing - until I am done.  This happens even if I sing a half-hour semi-detailed performance of a raga.  The attraction is so strong that she even stops crying (at least for some time) after wetting her nappy if I sing.  I have noticed all this since the day she was born.  So my question is: is this normal?  Would any baby exposed to music at an early age behave like this?  Or has this nothing to do with music?  Just that "papa is doing something... wow, what's he doing?"

  • Answer:

Some babies have a natural affinity for music.  Some love it.  My niece dances like I've never seen any other baby.  Other children are sensitive to noise and find music something that upsets them. I believe that the music that a child listens to from birth is the type of music that they will prefer the most.
