PDF (file format): What are ways to reduce size of e catalogue without compromising on resolution?

  • In a e catalogue meant only for viewing, how can the catalogue size in PDF form ( in KB) reduced ( besides saving it for web)?

    Ideally you can't. PDFs file format itself has the data compressed to the max possible way. But the trick is to use the images with resolution that you exactly need, that way you can't distinguish the loss in quality in the print. Some of the methods that I would try are, reduce the image resolution to 300dpi. Try pdfshrink. Not that it would have always... It has worked many times for me. Adobe illustrator has options to save the file in native PDF format where lot of options for compression methods for image and fonts are available and you can try your own combination If the catologue you have is fully of an image, then I would open it in Photoshop, and reduce the DPI myself and save it as a jpeg. Then use some online sites to convert it into PDF. In this way, I can control the DPI myself Use foxit printer or something similar to it and print the file into a PDF. Chk the size and quality, if you are lucky, this would give you easy way out All the above points are based on the assumption that you want to print the catalogue on a A4 or similar page size. If you want bigger, I would advice you not to compress it at all. If you are not printing it at all, but use it for online purposes, provide 2-3 options in your website with multiple resolution and file size. Let the users decide.

If there are extra pages that are not needed in the PDF file, you can use the free tool http://www.freepdfutilities.com/app/pdf-splitter/ to remove them, and this will reduce the overall size of the PDF file.  The amount of size reduction depends on how many pages you can eliminate.  If you are worried about download size, you might see what compressing the file using a program like 7zip would reduce it to, although it may not be much.
