Software salary in India after working 15 years in US?

How good is an in-hand salary of Rs 100k per month for a software developer in India with 4 years experience?

  • Should I be making more or is the salary decent as per the market standards? I am working with one of the better known product development companies in Bangalore.

  • Answer:

Salary is decided on many factors, like what was your previous, what is the pay scale for this much experienced candidates in that company, what is the designation offered, So can't really comment but still I think decent enough if we don't compare with US counterpart with the same experience :)

Have you first thought of what is that you want in life...because that usually defines what is good enough. If your savings > 100k - expenses, it usually good enough in most cases. However, life goes by faster than you think so while thinking of growing your base income is good, planning your finances so that you get the most out of them is also very important. At 4 years of experience, a software developer can get between Rs 143,769 - Rs 638,151. Reference: http://www.payscale.com/research/IN/Job=Software_Developer/Salary/062c3524/Entry-Level

You can use a salary benchmarking tool like http://zuby.in/salary to check how much others are being paid with your level of experience. 1L per month after tax at the age of 25 is very very good IMHO!

The salary for developers in India varies widely, based on skillsets, experience, interpersonal skills and educational background. For the a average Indian developer—with skills picked up from some mass-market diploma mill, mediocre or marginally deficient communication skills and a general lack of creative thinking, this is a very good salary. However, if you possess special skills—like script programming for automatic trading systems or esoteric coding skills of the type used in Avionics and embedded communications equipment, you could be making 5 times as much.

First of all you are making a good amount of money. You should definitely be happy about it. Having said that you asked "Should I be making more"? The simple answer would be yes you can and there will be people making more than that. But that doesn't mean you have to make more than them. While you work for a company for X years things will change, market value/Salaries will go high. For you to make a leap while switching the job you have to make sure you have learnt lots of things. Hence the real question should be whether you are doing work which is worth 100k per month, if the answer is no you should think of how to change it. If your doing work worth more than 100k you will definitely get a better offer when you plan to switch your job.P.S : I have 2+ yrs of experience and switching job now. I will be making 100k in hand per month after tax deductions from next month onwards.
