What other countries do fashion and style magazines in Italy, France, and UK praise about being stylish?
-
In the US one gets used to fashion magazines constantly saying Italians, the French, and the British are good examples of fine style. It's such a repeated theme that you stop thinking about it. But it makes me curious about what fashion magazines from those countries tell their readers? I mean, do they take the stance of, yeah, we are the most stylish, let's continue to set examples, or do they praise other countries?

Answer:
Yes but here in North America we tend to use Europe as our gage on fashion. Italy is the top. France comes 3 mo. after Italy. England come 1 yr after Italy. NYC and Montreal 2 yr. after Italy and Toronto 2.5 yr. then Vancouver 3 yr. after Italy But Vancouver with it's high asian population is influenced by Japan. Japan is one of the better dressed countries outside of Italy and France that I have seen. Watch out for the Chinese designers Together with Japan, and China we as a mutlicultural country will be right in the middle of the fashion squeeze. It will take another 10 yr. but it's coming.

What you need to understand is that Europe didn't just become influential one day to the other. Especially after World War II, designers came (back) to Paris. Especially Dior and Yves Saint Lauren were very influential for that time, and are still seen as icons. As well as "Coco" Chanel. Haute Couture is protected and only certain houses can say they make Haute Couture when they meet certain requirements. Especially in Paris but also Milan and London to some extend, there are famous shopping streets where the world's most luxurious brands are housed. The designers in Paris and Milan know that they are the best, they know that they or their brands are very influential and will cause a lot of talk, gossip and (media) attention. There is no denying in the fact that there are many upcoming influential designers from upcoming economies (Japan, China, Brazil etc.) but usually the magazines are indeed, focused on Europe, even if they are European. Note: in the U.S. some magazines do give American brands somewhat more "attention" but that depends on the magazine. Usually they focus on European houses, which are more exclusive and trendsetting.

It seems that no one here has really answered your question, and I don't read any fashion magazines, foreign or not, but I can provide an anecdote. Rick Owens got his first "big break" when one of his famous distressed leather jackets was worn by Kate Moss and shown in Vogue Paris. Just a bit earlier, he had moved production to Italy. Shortly thereafter, a fashion show of his was sponsored by the American Vogue. So as you can see, Vogue Paris does highlight foreign talent. And Rick was selling exclusively in LA, not in NYC.
