What does an advertising junior executive do?

What is the daily life of an advertising executive like?

  • Please give an overview of the different departments that a person "in advertising" could be in and the kind of work he has to undertake.

  • Answer:

    I am only answering the part which deals with various departments present and their roles. Account management/ Client servicing: They are the face of the agency to the client in simple words. They get briefs from the client and decide on tasks and assign them within the agency. They also need to coordinate with various other departments to keep a track of things. Account Planner: These people are responsible for their respective account/brand. They decide on what is happening with the brand, what has to be done to improve visibility or what action is to be taken if there is threat from its competitors. It is mostly a strategic role and account planers/brand managers decide on long term approach for a brand to sustain. Media planning: This department deals with placing the ads on various media vehicles. Based on data available (TRPs/Readership etc) they decide where to place the ad/how many times to place and what will be the spending to reach the Target audience. Basically calculating Reach-Frequency-Impact index and planning accordingly. Creative department: They are responsible for coming up with a concept based on the brief. This department  constitutes of Art direction dept, Studio and a Copy writing dept. 1.  Art direction and studio: They are responsible for the 'look and feel' of the ad. They design ads based on the concept and this design is implemented by studio guys using softwares like Photoshop etc. 2. Copy-writing: People in this dept are generally language experts and are responsible for all the words that you see in the ads. e.g: Taglines/ slogans/ Voice overs etc. They are responsible to decide on the tone of voice that will go in the ad based on the brief given by the client. Production department: This team closely works with the creative department. During conceptualization, creative team consults with the production team to know if the idea is feasible given the budget and other factors. They deal with execution of the idea here being production of the ad. Anything to do with shooting, recording hiring directors is done by production team Other departments like HR and Finance and research department may exist based on the  size of the agency. P.S: I am only a student of advertising and would've missed out on other important roles. Please to feel free to add in more. :)
