How much should I pay to study in A-Level?

Was it possible for a penniless foreigner to pay for his university study in USA in the 1970s?

  • I read an article about Ang Lee from http://www.thegroundmag.com/ang-lee-a-never-ending-dream/ . It is said that he applied to study film at University of Illinois in 1978 (and accepted). He went there without his father's approval. So I believe it's safe to assume that Ang Lee was (almost) penniless during his study and he must have worked part time to pay for his living cost and tuition fee. If it were to happen today, I don't think he would be able to pay his living cost, let alone paying tuition fee. And well, probably he wouldn't even get student visa in the first place. But, how was it in the 1970s?

  • Answer:

Was it possible to pay for higher education in the 1970's USA with no money?  Of course not.  Even at 1970's prices, the cost of tuition, etc. was huge relative to incomes.  You've got it right; students without scholarships or family money worked part time and went to school part time.
